Is a lack of receivers really the problem?

I just want to throw this out there. If you look at the giants this year they had a true 1 and 2 in cruz and nicks but they were terrible as an offensive. In the past they worked with the same group of guys and were dominant enough to win 2 super bowls.

If anyone can provide more insight on this that would be great. I only saw 1 or 2 games this season and had to collect more info from rotoworld.

Ex-Giants OC Kevin Gilbride blames Eli Manning's disastrous 2013 on the team's protection issues.
"It just made it impossible for our quarterback to function," Gilbride said. "(Eli) is a guy where if you give him enough time, he’s always going to be throwing the ball to the right person. ... But he’s not a scrambler and you’ve got to give him some help." New York's line was inarguably among the league's worst, but that still doesn't explain away the 42 picks Manning has thrown over his past 32 games. His "league-leading" 27 interceptions this season were the most by any quarterback since 2005. Fixing their broken line is just one of many things the G-Men need to do to resuscitate their offense

Here is a better question to ask. What would improve the team more? WR or OL?

Scenario if we get 2 WRs - We have an slight improvement in offense. We probably score 3-5 pts more per game compared to last year

Scenario if we get 2 OLs - We have better improvement on offense. Run game avgs more yards and we see a similar benefit in the WRs we have. We score 5-7 pts more per game.

What do you think?

I often wonder what would have happened to our defense if say we drafted 2 CBs last year instead of 2 DTs. I feel we go from top 3 defense to top 15 just based on the weaker pass rush. What I realize is that pass rush is the most important element in defense. You cant give the QB time to throw or he is going to hit every target.

Your scenarios are bullshit. This year defenses have stacked the box because of how laughable our WR corps are. Even if we upgrade the right side of the O-Line with a nice shiny tackle it won't mean we'll have instance success. Getting Amini back would probably do more for our run game than a rookie RT could. Resigning Gross and Wharton will also be important, along with finding a FA veteran RT, and drafting one for the future.

I doubt that having an improved O-Line would net us "5-7" more points a game, especially compared to WRs only adding "3-5". Our RBs would have to instantly become touchdown scorers. Right now regardless of how they penetrate the line they can't break tackles (besides Tolbert), which is needed against the stacked boxes we're playing. Having actual threats spreading the field would, in my opinion, do more for our run game. It would also unarguably give us a better chance to score touchdowns.

Or is it the lack of time Cam has in the pocket. A few things of note is that Cam lacked in deep balls this year. This was mainly due to the line. Now, when Cam had time against the Niners, he picked them apart and nailed a perfect pass to smith. Now we definitely need a WR, but maybe the focus should be on overhauling the line and not forking out completely for a WR. Not to mention, our line gets absolutely NO push, and isn't great at opening holes. We could have Megatron out there, but if Cam is constantly under pressure and either doesn't have time to throw, or have errand throws, then even Megatron would have a down year. There's so many offseason threads on here asking the same damn questions, but where's this one? For fug sake, we had a third tier defensive tackle starting at right guard for us!

We shoud just end all of these posts about the same topic.....the answer is BOTH.

We need to address both OL and WR this year.....both need an upgrade.

FA WR, draft WR and OL in the first two rounds.

You don't have to look far for answer, the answer is within our division. Look at the rosters of the Falcons and the Saints. The Saints have a good line that gives time for Brees to make ok receivers look good (ie Stills, Moore, & Meachem), while the Falcons line is so porous that Ryan has absolutely no time to get the ball to his outstanding playmakers (ie Jones, White, & Gonzo).

For an outstanding offense you need,

- A difference making QB

- A line to protect him

- Multiple reliable WRs

- A stable of RBs

We have the first and last, but need work in the middle portions.

The Saints also have Graham (who is unstoppable) and Sporals to go with their avg. WR corp. So they have 2 hard to defend weapons in the pass game. We don't have any.

Even if you go to 2009 when they won the Super Bowl, while Graham was still at the U and Sproles was in SD, Brees was still putting up phenomenal numbers (4,388 yards, 34TD-11INT)

His receivers included

- Marques Colston

- Devery Henderson

- Pierre Thomas

- Reggie Bush

- Lance Moore

- Jeremy Shockey

- David Thomas

- Robert Meachem

That group of receivers is no better than our current receivers

Come on, man.  With Colston and Lance Moore, that group is way better than ours.  Brees had a pretty good receiving group then, and he has a pretty good group now.  Both Colston and Moore have shown they're capable of 1000+ yard seasons.  Nobody on our roster now is capable of doing that.

You should know that Brees makes the receivers, both Meachem and Henderson left and got no where... In fact Meachem came back to NOLA after signing that monster contract in SD (Because he did nothing) and was productive with Brees at the helm... As for Henderson he washed out of the league, I cant think of any receiver that was made by Brees in NOLA and made it elsewhere.

Moore is often injured and hasnt played a full season since 2010

Colston also seems to be often knicked up and I personally would not take him over Smitty

And none of their TEs back in 2009 are as good as Olsen IMO

I think the WRs on this need to either step up and show they want and can work for that starting job or sit down. Part of me wonder if there is some sort of power struggle going on behind the scenes with Smitty not wanting to give the other WRs a more stronger role and they in turn not push as hard as not to step on his toes. Especially when it's clear to see how well loved Smitty is by fans.

JSHO. but the WRs on this team don't seem to really step up and push themselves as hard as the other more well known WRs on other teams. Football is about instinct and timing. Many of those dropped balls by the WRs seem more due to instincts not being sharp enough.

I would trade our group now for that group. Most of those Wr have had better years then all our WR not name Smith.

    • lol, that second part is quite literally one of the dumbest things ever. Having or not having guaranteed contracts has absolutely nothing to do with how much these billionaires have to pay.  Because there is a hard cap and a minimum cap spend requirement, and teams either use their cap or roll it over to use it all the next year, so the owners have to pay the same amount of money in the end no matter what. Having fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL would only hurt salary cap management, and thus would end up screwing over the team and its fan base when teams kiss on signings as they take up cap room that is needed to improve the roster. Look at the Browns with Watson, they gave him the fully guaranteed deal and all it’s doing is sucking up massive cap space now.  If they hadn’t done that, the owner would still be paying the same amount of money each year as that cap space would still be used elsewhere. If you want to argue for fully guaranteed contracts because the players deserve it, that’s an entirely different argument and a fair one to discuss.  But anyone against fully guaranteed deals isn’t doing it to argue for the billionaire owners.

    • Ryabkin could be the steal of the draft, he was a Top 10 pick heading into last season and had a rough year.  Lots of GMs passed on him because of that and his workouts. Pick has really high upside and Svech should be able to translate Rod tearing his arse a new one for making dumb plays since Svech has had several years of it.  🤣😂
