If Hardy goes, our run defense will take a big step back year. I'm not too concerned about that in this division (D-Lo somehow led the division in both rushing and yards from scrimmage for a back), but we're going to face quite a few good running teams like Chicago, Seattle, Minnesota, and Philadelphia, and that doesn't even include teams with good all-purpose backs like Detroit, Green Bay, and Cincinnati. Unless we can somehow majorly upgrade our offense with that cap space, I would keep him.

No matter how hard I toss this around in my head, I can neither confirm or deny this because my mind tells me Hardy is not worth it but my heart tells me he may be the heart of the defense.

The thing is......Running backs aren't that hard to find and they have a short career life. Finding solid pass rushers are a premium and when you have one in his prime - you keep him.

At this point, I doubt there are anymore negotiations. Gman has made his offer and now Hardy and Rosenhaus will go shopping on the open market. We'll see.

I think it's going to come down to
1. Tag for a year so we can get some financial room.
2. Tag and trade
3. Sign a modest deal to win with us.
4. Break a team like Oakland, and maybe reach the playoffs again once he's over 30...

As much has been made of the straight money issues with Hardy, he also needs to consider where he goes, and his future.  He's got a great set of teammates here.  A Stud at QB, LB, some monster DTs to keep from too much double teaming Hardy.  Plus, with the Panthers on the rise, his exposure for endorsements and other opportunities is better here in our smaller market than somewhere like Oakland (which I keep throwing out because they have a mess of cap space)

 

Also, wherever he goes, he's going to be public enemy #1 that offenses are going to plan against.  If they don't have someone who can take the pressure off of him...he's going to be running in place until they do.  Is he willing to do that?

 

I think when he said he wouldn't mind the franchise tag in order to get the cap straightened out, he was saying he really does want to stay here, but for his fair value.  Gettelman has said in his interviews he wants to be fair for the team, and not dole out excessive contracts just for sentimentality's sake.

 

This is an issue we have no idea what's going to happen.  It's between Hardy, Rosehause and Gettleman.  One thing I do know is that Gettleman will do what's best for the team first.

Hardy is not great, but he's to good to let him walk for nothing in return. I hope that he is willing to sign an affordable deal that would not handicap the team and I believe that Gettleman is just the man to put that in perspective for him and help him understand that it's about team and the team is finally heading in the right direction with identity, purpose and expectations...

He's talking about (at least I think he is) signing Hardy to a large deal with a big signing bonus and then prorating the contract in such a way that the cap hit for the first 2 years is really low.   After which Charles Johnson could likely be cut opening up cap space for Hardy's deal to expand in cap hit.
