Remember how the Bengals have used two of their last four 1st rounders on tight ends?

 

Jermaine Gresham in 2013 - 461 yards, 4 TDs

Zach Ertz in 2013 - 445 yards, 2 TDs

 

Greg Olsen in 2013 - 816 yards, 6 TDs

 

If we want a guy to catch 400 yards and 2 or 3 TDs per season for us, then we're making a huge mistake by drafting him in the first. Or the second. Or the third.

 

You can find UDFA who can do this kind of stuff

 

 

Just because the Bengals use their TEs innefectively does not mean that we would.

 

ASJ or Ebron would become one of our top receiving threats, whereas theirs are behind Green  and Jones who catch a ton of passes.

Also they have Andy dalton throwing to them. Greg Olsen was most of the times the first option in the passing game. The bengals TEs were behind Aj green and Marvin jones. Your argument is really lacking.

We need legitimate pass catchers. Regardless of what arbitrary position they fall under. ASJ would help in the passing game catching blocking and help in the run game blocking.

Tight end will be a need if we don't re-sign Hartsock. G-man alluded to the fact that we may have to start thinking about getting someone younger to groom as Hartsock is getting up there in age (34). I am like you in that I would draft Ebron, but I also like ASJ.  That being said, depending upon the Combine and how the draft goes, I really don't think either one will be on the board, so I am keeping an eye on Marcel Jensen in one of the later rounds, as he has shown flashes of play making ability, and he is a solid blocker from all accounts.

That's not true. If we wanted to run a two TE set, we'd already have a 2nd viable pass-catching tight end. They're not that difficult to find, new ones come out of the woodwork yearly. In fact, Brandon Williams could be a diamond in the rough, yet we never even thought about using him because we don't run that type of offense.

Yeah yeah, I meant Eifert, even looked up his stats, just wrote it totally wrong for whatever reason. And the Bengals were just an example. Cowboys took Escobar in the 2nd last year; 134 yards, 2 TDs. Zach Ertz: 469 yards, 4 TDs. Vance McDonald: 119 yards, 0 TDs. Travis Kelce: 0 yards, 0 TDs.

 

You can find guys in free agency who could double that production. You can find guys off the street that could match it. If it's not Ebron, who is the exception because he's gonna end up being a Jimmy Graham / Rob Gronk type player, then it's not worth it when he's not gonna be your #1 TE option.

 

Why would you spend a 1st or a 2nd on a #2 TE who will hit the field only in certain sets when you can spend that same pick finding a #1 WR or a #1 CB? Or a guy to shore up the offensive line? I just don't get it man.
