Bring back Lafell?

Recommended Posts

Not a lot of rumbling about this. Hear me out ...

Assuming Smitty is still around, re-signing Ginn, and drafting one or two WR's, should we consider bringing back Lafell on a team-friendly 1-2 year deal? Despite what everyone thinks, he knows the system, is a good blocker, and can help shepard in the new WR's. I don't see the harm, unless you think another FA WR is out there for a similar price tag that would serve a better role. What do you think?

LOL.

Idiots: Derp, NO!

Rational Thinkers: Maybe if he's cheap. He's still an excellent blocker and a decent pass catcher.

Seriously, guys. Prove you know some football and recognize that every WR in the NFL isn't a number one. He's had better than 600 yards in every season except his rookie year.

Thank you. That's a consolidated version of my rationale. He get's way too much hate for what he does.

For sure. I think he gets way too much heat for what he doesn't do than what he actually does. People expected him to be Moose, and since Moose is a Top 100 WR of all-time, they were big shoes to fill. Why can't he produce 1,000 yards playing beside Smith? Well.... not many WR in the NFL could produce 1,000 yards as the second WR.

He's a good route runner, has good hands, and has sprung more big rushing plays than any TE on our roster. People just want a superstar. They're looking towards Pipe Dream Hakeem when we don't have the money and might even have trouble keeping Ginn.

Exactly. Very few teams have two #1 WR's (other than the Broncos, Falcons, maybe a couple more).

Who does Calvin Johnson play across? AJ Green? Andre Johnson (though Hopkins could develop well down the road)? No doubt we need WR help, but Shula runs a smash-smouth, ground-and-pound offense. A solid blocking #2 who puts up ok numbers isn't a bad asset, especially on a team-friendly deal.

Would not want him back for the sole reason that if we drafted Matthews or Benjamin and lafell got the #2 WR spot over one of them just because Rivera likes him lol Edit: only kinda serious but I feel he's had his chance and done little to nothing with it Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

    • If we lose tomorrow we’d have to sweep the Bucs in order to get into the playoffs. With a loss tomorrow the Bucs would then hold the tie breaker if we finished tied If we can’t split with NO then we sure as hell not sweeping Tampa It’s win or go home tomorrow in my eyes  Biggest game since 2017 playoff game imo
    • Grok AI: No, there are no credible reports that the Carolina Hurricanes offered Jake Guentzel the same contract terms as Tampa Bay (7 years, $63 million total, $9 million AAV) before he signed with the Lightning. Reliable sources, including The Athletic, consistently reported that Carolina’s offer during negotiations was an eight-year deal worth $64 million ($8 million AAV). Guentzel did not accept it promptly, leading the Hurricanes to trade his negotiating rights to Tampa Bay on June 30, 2024, for a 2025 third-round pick. He then quickly signed the 7x$9M deal with the Lightning on July 1, 2024. Guentzel himself later reflected (in 2025 interviews) that staying in Carolina was his initial preference, but negotiations stalled and “didn’t work out,” with Tampa’s opportunity becoming a “no-brainer.” No reports from outlets like ESPN, NHL.com, or insiders (e.g., Elliotte Friedman, Pierre LeBrun, Frank Seravalli) indicate Carolina ever matched or offered the Lightning’s exact terms—total money, AAV, or length. The extra year was Carolina’s key advantage, but they reportedly stuck closer to $8M AAV and moved on when Guentzel explored options.
