What some people are forgetting are the big moments where smitty showed up. That gets lost in the stat sheets. The patriots game, the dolphins game and even the playoff game before he was crippled and could barely run.

We better be damn sure a receiver is going to step up or we get someone that will. Cause our offense without smitty right now is gonna be a bunch of nobodys and unprovens. That's scary

he doesn't need to take a pay cut. You don't cut someones pay for a dip in one year. There is no trend so far to say he is in decline as he has had similar dips in his career.

You're right he has had a couple of dips throughout his career.  With Jimmy Clausen/Matt Moore as his qb.  I think circumstances regarding the qb was a bit different last year compared to his other bad year considering we got Cam.

his targets vs catches % is consistent. Throw him the ball more and he catches more. Move him to he slot and he catches

85+. He is taylor made for short slants and drag routes. This may be what was refferred to as "reduced " role which if they move him will result in an increased role.

He's gotta be open to get a target.

You can't really look backwards to validate Smitty.  Whatever he did when he was 32 or 33 has no bearing on the feasibility of paying him for what he might do at 35.  The common, historical trend is that the 2014 production is more likely to drop than it is to improve.
