Things we know about Gman!

Couple of clarifications. Restructures aren't bad and adding void years is not good. Some contracts are designed to help with short term cap situations and are designed to be restructured. Smitty's contract for one. Given that we are dumping 17 million in dead cap space and the cap is going up substantially the next 2 years, restructures are not going to hurt us as long as we don't do it all the time. Void years like we did with Gross are not good things because it lowers the cap in one year but when we void the contract the money accelerates and leaves us with a big dead cap issue. The 17 million is due to primarily Beason restructuring (8 million) and Gross when the contract voided left us with a 5 million dead cap issue.

If we extend Johnson we need to be straight with him and give him some guaranteed money but like Gross tell him if he doesn't take less he is gone after this year He got plenty of guaranteed money and his cap hit of 16 million this year and 17 million next year is crazy for the production we got. If you restructure you just guarantee a 20 million cap in 2015 which makes him a prime candidate to release given his dead cap money next year is 6 million IIRC. He will be here this year because the dead cap space and his normal cap hit are both 16 million.

You seem knowledgable of the cap situation! Knowing how Gettleman runs the show, how does he get the immediate relief needed to fill roster holes and sign draft picks? When do teams have to be under the cap?

Aren't we like $110mil towards the cap already in 2015? Without Cam and Luke's deals? How much dead money is already accounted for next year?. I expect the cap to be around $150 next year so will allow us breathing space.

I hear the cap will be 140 next year and 150 in 2015.  Some of the contracts on the books for 2015 do not count Hardy for example since he is on the tag, count Smitty as a 10 million cap hit next year and don't include anyone we will sign moving forward or will restructure.  It also doesn't count any dead cap space which we will generate this year from any cuts so really the team cap number for next year could change by a ton between now and then.

From what I remember draft picks aren't included until they sign their deals this summer so we have a lot of time before we worry about that.  The issue is that you have to always stay under the cap as soon as you sign a new player so expect Gettleman to have a number of potential deals with various  current players which he can execute if they need money to sign a potential FA.  For example he likely won't do anything with Godfrey until he has a player he wants or decides he can't contribute.  But there is no need to cut him yet.  The same with Smitty.  We keep him until we need to make a move and ask him to restructure or change the contract.  If he does he stays.  If not we likely cut him if we find his replacement.

If he made all these deals all at once and freed up 10 or 20 million more in cap space then he can't cry we are so cap strapped and try to get players to give us a discount.  Guys like Hardy will hold out for more guaranteed money and for contracts not to be so back loaded. So you need money as you move forward but you need to always stay close to the cap so we can keep crying the "woe is me" tune.

I did mean $140mil, then it's expected to rise upto and maybe beyond $150mil possibly in 2016, I guess people forget there's like $17mil in dead money accounting for this years cap, add that a few weeks ago and even signing hardy and gano it's leaves $24mil with restructures stil to do and June 1st cuts, that figure all of sudden doesn't sound so bad, we need to get peoples cap numbers down especially CJ and reduce the dead money.

    • If it’s all the same to you guys, I’d like to use this thread for Tuesday nights game as well to keep this hate going. I have a feeling Tuesday vs the panthers is going to be violent in that arena.    @LinvilleGorgecan you please add “and Tuesday” to the game thread?  They play the Panthers again Tuesday. Thank you sir!
    • Nobody on the huddle is saying we have an elite group offensively across the board. They aren't great. They're young. If you are expecting someone to agree with your position of blaming everyone around Bryce Young nearly three full seasons into his career you are going to be left holding the bag save for a handful of people who act like they are paid to defend his honor. Bryce Young is not a guy who has had to claw and fight his way into starting jobs in football. He's had the best to work with and been gifted roles since he was a teenager. The Panthers have one of the youngest rosters in the league and with us needing an infusion of young defensive talent in the upcoming draft we're only going to get younger. We need a QB who possesses the ability to elevate those around him. If you can't agree with me on that then there's nothing further to discuss.
    • All Bryce and the Panthers had to do was split with the Saints and a rookie QB. The bar was so low. They even had a whole bye week to prepare. The time for singing kumbaya was before that game. Anyone still talking about Bryce earning a second contract 43 games into his career is living a fantasy. He might get one from the Tepper owned Panthers but he's damn sure not earned it.
