Question for Steve haters

TN05

Recommended Posts

I never thought the possibilty existed until a few weeks ago. Never crossed my mind.  But now that is it being discussed I can the positives in letting Smitty go. And, yes, there are positives. I'd like him to stay. With that said, agreeing with a tough business decision doesn't make anyone a hater.

I bet you anything Smitty would've helped out or at least restructured. He's team first, not me first.

I wouldn't make that bet if I were you because Steve has said point blank on the radio more than once the he is not redoing his contract.

He notably does not like the media. Why would you believe that he gave credible information to the media? Remember when he was hurt last season giving crap like 57%, 73%, etc. (I don't know the real numbers)? He doesn't care about telling the media what his actual thoughts are. And why should he?

You're making it seem like the guy puts up 100 yards a season and makes $12million/year. The $7million IS a lot, but cutting him would only save us $2million!!! Stupid stupid decision to cut him. G-man should've just asked him nicely to take a pay cut, and explained the situation, and I bet you anything Smitty would've helped out or at least restructured. He's team first, not me first.

How do you know Gman didn't ask Smith to take a pay cut and Smith refused?  We don't know any details at the moment.

How do we know that Smith would have automatically agreed to having his wages severely slashed...?

I'm waiting for more details to come out.  Until then,  I believe Gman has the best interests of the franchise in mind.    He isn't emotionally invested in 89.    Like some of us are.      If I was GM, I'd probably be one of the fans to be oblivious to 89 aging or the money he is making or going to make,  and not dare suggest a pay cut to our franchise's best player.    I'm glad I'm not a GM.

I tend to take a man at his word until proven otherwise. So now you're saying that you can't believe Smith when he say no restructure? So you're saying that during the meeting with the GM he said he would gladly restructure his contract but the GM said gtfo? Are you serious?

He also said this at the press conference at the end of the season but nobody made a big deal out of it then. He said that they were going to take a few weeks to evaluate the team before free agency and the draft. He said they were evaluating everyone. Then comes the combine and a reporter asked him again and specifically asked about Smith at which point you could tell he was obviously perturbed about it but he gave an honest answer and complimented Smith in the process. If Steve was

surprised he was being evaluated then he wasn't paying attention because it had already been addressed weeks

before and he certainly should have known his contract was due to be renegotiated. It's how Hurney set it up before he signed it. I'm not hating either side here. I just

don't see the big deal about the Gmans comment nor the

need to redo Steve's contract. He's been paid handsomely

for his services so he's owed no additional respect. The

way some act here it's as if we murdered his family and

burned down his house and are taking him to the woods

to behead him. Sent from my Nexus 7 using

"Pump your brakes Playboy. Your analogy was way off base. No one, including Smith has a problem with or didn't know about all players being evaluated. The problem that I had and believe that Smith had was not being given the respect to hear it from his employer first. I'm not saying that they owe him anything, I'm saying that they could've and should've given him that respect. The necessary respect was given to Gross and Hardy but not Smith. Smith has been the best WR on the team since 95.

I don't and nobody does (except G-man and Smity). But it doesn't matter. Cutting him does not help clear up cap room, and there's no other reason to cut him. Even if he did refuse, we'd still be much better off keeping him than cutting him.

He may think he has the best interests, but he's strictly business and may not understand how much Smitty means to the team emotionally. He doesn't have to be emotionally invested, but the team and many many of the players ARE emotionally invested, and he needs to understand that. And so do many here--it's not just the fans that are emotionally invested. I bet you anything Rivera is invested emotionally to some degree as well, even only being here 3 seasons. Him getting flat out cut would have a huge domino effect on the outlook of the players going forward, and it would completely hinder our chances at repeating our success of this year. Smith may not be putting up 1,000 yard seasons and 10+ tds, but he makes big plays in big situations. 4th and 10 against the Dolphins.... Against the 49ers in the playoffs... He is a huge part of the team and being without him would be a nightmare.

What an idea!  Wonder why G-Man didn't think of that?

We don't KNOW a thing. It's completely POSSIBLE that G-man didn't even ask him to take a pay cut or restructure, and he's just going ahead and putting him on the trade block with plans to cut him if a trade doesn't work out. We don't know.

Do you know for a fact that G-man did ask Smitty anything? As I just typed in another response, it's completely possible he didn't ask him at all in the meeting and straight up put him on the trade block with plans to cut him if a trade didn't work out.
