Regardless of Smith's age he's by far the best WR on the team. Defenses has to plan against him. His leadership on the team can't immediately be replaced and he is a huge part of Cam's development. He's in Cams ear because Cam respects him. We need a number 2 or 1 to give Smith that complimentary WR he hasn't had since Moose.

Like most of you, I grew up watching Smitty play... and it's tough any time a fan has to see his favorite player go. Even if his level of play has diminished over the years, you can't help but look at the past and everything he's met to our franchise. BUT this is a business. Smitty will count $7 million against the cap this year (not $2 million that I've heard some people say). I understand why Gettleman is doing what he is doing, as much as it sucks. I just hope we can get SOMETHING for him.

 

I'm also hoping that he lands in Denver. I always wanted to see how he would be with a really good QB. Not to say Cam isn't great, because he's gotten much better with throwing since his rookie year but his accuracy still Payton precise at times (let's not kid ourselves) and for Smitty to play with Payton at this stage of his career would be fun to watch.

 

Still, hoping the Panthers beat the Broncos when we play them.

Honestly, it's not about loyalty. It is not beneficial to let him go money-wise. Why not let Stewart go? He's collected more dust than grandma's stuffed cats? It feels like Gettleman setting an example of the franchise in that you produce or youre out, no matter who you are or what you've accomplished. He can take his Giants' mentality and stick it up his ass.

      This is just a different type of draft. There's no top shelf compared to recent drafts. In the last ten years or so, there was a clear group. The issue with this draft is the best players are at lowered valued spots. Plus I said before Id always take the 8th best edge/de over the best safety. Panthers have always overrated LBs and RB compared to the league, but they did get safety right in terms of not valuing it. Mike Minter was about it, others die hards can bring up...  Still in order to better receive this draft, once you drop the positional value and just take the best player, its easier to understand. Very odd draft and the first time in history I can recall needing to do this. Just memeber coofus and NIL have changed the draft. There's lots more older players, cause now money to a guy that maybe 6th or maybe UD..... I mean Id take the college girls and 800k too, I think....

      Good write up OP..... I may be the outlier here but I like our WR sans XL. Metchie is sneaky good and just like Dowdle last year he WILL BE the biggest under the radar singing of this year FA moves. I am warming up to the idea of Sadiq at 19 over defense. I'm just ready for every BY excuse to be gone, he doesn't have this or that. No he just sucks and we need to move on. Honestly I've said it before but this team has been depleted of so much talent over the years we really could go BPA and be fine. In DM I trust..........for now
