Steve Smith Will Not Be In a Panthers Uniform Next Season

Recommended Posts

utilitarianism is a neutral philosophy that can be used for bad by bad people or good by good people. anyone that doesn't realize this is probably a 47-year-old white guy with a mustache and interstate batteries baseball cap reposting reagan quotes on facebook and yelling about obama and the communists

also lol your username

I don't know if any philosophy that can readily be used to justify, however weakly, the death of 10,000,000 people is neutral. You get to a certain point where objective definitions don't really matter.

Not trying to trash talk you or anything. I just think the way we use that quote is an interesting idiomatic quirk, that's all. I mean, it was birthed because of the Holodmor. And we tend to use it like its sound reasoning. I'll also have you know the name was very clever back in 2008.

This sounds like what we have all known about Smitty for years.  His passion and emotion is his best friend and worst enemy.  Nobody that isn't in that locker room really knows the truth, but it sounds like Steve Smith still wanted to be the alpha dog and tell everyone about how he is the alpha dog (kinda like him bragging to the media about cursing Cam out on the sidelines for moping, something Cam probably needed to hear, but didn't need to be aired out in the public after the fact).  And in Gettleman's eyes it was hindering guys like Cam and Luke from taking over the team from a leadership stand point

I've read nothing about this "hindering leadership" angle from real sources. Only from fans, and sports "journalists" on twitter.

Not sure who you would really hear it from.

Doubt that the team or players would really talk about it....assuming that it were true.  Which, I am not saying that it is.

Yeah if only we could have scored more in the red zone.

True.  We spent almost the whole season in the top 10 but then played several good defenses toward the end of the season.

One of the other things I think people forget is we played some pretty darn good defenses this year also.

Well if I believe anything, it's comments by players about the possibility of him exiting. They did not sound happy about the idea.

But the decision to cut ties with Smith is about more than money.  Sources say Gettleman viewed Smith as a distraction and is ready to turn the locker room over to emerging stars such as quarterback Cam Newton and middle linebacker Luke Keuchly

Steve Smith's fiery personality made him a fan favorite but can grate on other players and coaches

Bill Voth and David Newton hinted at similar themes on twitter

This a little different from the Delhomme situation. The guy regressed really fast.

I don't know about him being a #1, but I don't think he's completely done either. All I read about is how his production sank so much, yet nobody wants to talk about how our offense as a whole had low numbers, and statistically we went from top 15, to bottom 10, in one season.

Our offense had low numbers because we were a conservative ball control O and threw the ball less than just about every other team. This resulted in us having fewer drives per team than everyone except San Diego which was by design. This also resulted in our D being on the field a fewer amount of times so their stats would be lower. So while fewer drives makes the O look bad at first sight it also makes the D look better. Fewer chances means less opportunity to put up yards so this favors the D statistically.

However we were NOT a bottom 10 offense.

We ranked:

11th in yards per drive

10th in points per drive

7th in turnovers per drive

16th in interceptions per drive

3rd in fumbles per drive

3rd in plays per drive

2nd in TOP per drive

5th in drive success rate

9th in TD's per drive

13th in FG's per drive

17th in punts per drive

12th in 3 and outs

15th in points in the redzone

8th in TD's in the redzone

5th in average lead

    • Yeah, I could jump right into the unbelievable Bryce debate now that some people are trying to flip the script because Bryce Young has, at most, a handful of decent games as a pro, but that's going to work itself out. Suffice it to say that I've seen better QBs (with an s) in a Panthers uniform, and I've certainly seen better QBs be drafted while we're playing around with Bryce, one of them who beat the crap out of us already this season... Let's forget about Bryce (and his markedly underwhelming play since he's been here); I think that most sane fans will agree that drafting him was an error, but it happens. Sure, it doesn't happen to the tune of King's ransom---including your main receiver---but it happens. You bet, you lose. Speaking of receivers...and betting and losing... Oh, man, we drafted Xavier Legette. Yes, just like with Bryce, I've entered "the dark side." Some Huddlers were telling us from the beginning, and they were right. But, I'm not apologizing for waiting to see what a guy's got before making my decision on him. X was a one-year wonder at South Carolina who parlayed some really nice production that season, a great personality and thick country accent, into becoming a first round pick (but only in Carolina). For Dan Morgan and company, He was a big swing that has turned into a big whiff (and I can still feel the ill breeze from that one). Sh¡t happens, right? Well, not so fast. Ladd McConkey was the decidedly more polished receiver who was literally ready to hit the ground running as soon as stepping onto the field as a pro. Ladd was never the biggest guy (though not the smallest), but he was the guy that could run routes, always seemed to get open---no question---and had the same speed as X, but with legit quickness and nuanced shake and bake. But Dan chose the project. He chose the guy where the game speed looks more like a tractor trailer than a 5.0 mustang. Look, I've supported X (just like Bryce) many many a day, but no more. Now I'm not saying that I won't root for the guy. Just like with Bryce, he seems like a great kid. But as far as giving excuses for the kid, and, perhaps more importantly, waiting for some miraculous breakout, I'm done with that. I've seen enough. You don't draft a project for a project. And yes, Bryce had proven to be a project after his first season. In my mind, drafting a supposedly number one receiver that needs lots of development for a starting quarterback that needs immediate help to try and further his development is not going to lead to good things. Pick the surest guy. Or at least pick the one who appears to be the surest guy, because picking can be tricky... especially when you're too busy tricking yourself.
    • Winning ain't gonna make my eyes lie to me. Context matters, and it will always matter in the game of football.
    • That TD pass to Legette against Miami. Elite. The play where Bryce rolls right to buy time until Tet can reverse field.  Bryce pumps as multiple defenders close in.  He barely gets it away before he takes a big time hit.  Beautiful off platform throw and great catch by Tet.   The second TD to Tet against Dallas where Bryce dips and turns his shoulder in to evade the pass rusher.  Resets and finds Tet in the end zone. Dude embodies the Keep Pounding mantra.
