Seems more like a wash to me.

and that's if we draft a WR that produces immediately which is no easy feat in the NFL.

I can think of quite a few wrs that played well their rookie year. Keenan Allen and Tavon Austin last year.  There are plenty before too in recent years.

Then you know how long it took for the light to come on with Austin...some were writing him off in the first half of the season.

They finally figured out how to use Austin.  Keenan Allen played solid the whole year.  There's no reason a 1st round pick with great talent can't be helpful.

I'd love to SOMEHOW get Jones/Cotchery/Rice

But would be ok with Jones and Cotchery

Something I've been anticipating though is how they approach their jersey numbers if they sign here. They BOTH currently wear #89. Doubt Jackie would let either of them have it but I think if they don't even try to ask for it, that'll work wonders with the fans.

Sure a first round WR can be helpful but I wouldn't want to depend on them turning into a bonafide number #1 from the start.

He had 700 yards with Favre too as the third receiver and a rookie.

Great points you've constructed here.

Anyways this might be totally unrelated but the teams with the best scouting and GMs haven't even brought him in to talk to in person. Wait in fact no teams have......

    • FA may or may not be the best option each time. You know as well as I do that the LT is the highest paid position on offense behind QB and WR. If you have cap concerns, it would be better to draft a quality LT and hold him for 3-4 years before you have to sign him to a long term (and expensive 2nd contract). I wouldn't want to acquire a run stuffing DT in FA if I could get a younger one much cheaper in the draft.  Let's say no good Safties are on the market when prior to drafting. Once again you'd go to the draft. FA is a good way to feel out the roster prior to the draft, but it's possible to REACH there too. FO's usually end up over playing guys (at least at certain positions) who have already peaked. Besides, you always have to consider that the team that let them go didn't think they were worth the price they were asking to retain them. That certainly applies to our defense. We could draft the BPA at any level of our defense and immediately improve our team. A stud on the line beside DB would help the the run and pass defense. Our LB core needs a thumper/impact player at any position. We need another CB to play alongside JC. We have yet to see a Safety on our roster significantly impact a game this year.
    • Maybe Rod will change it up and slot Bussi in net. Why risk the inevitable injury to Freddie this early in the season against a team that will likely win regardless.  Just show up and play to win, that's all I ask.
    • Well, I feel the same way about pharmaceutical, junk/fast food and political ads. They all cause active and KNOWN harm to the populace but we are the penultimate corrupt Western country, so that's just where we are as a society.
