The Next Steve Smith

..is not Cooks, is not Ellington, or any of these other really small guys.  If ANYONE in this draft compares to Smitty, in my opinion it's OBJ.

Yea, OBJ is smallish like Steve, but that's not where I'm drawing the comparison.  He's not even SUPER small or anything, just a couple inches under the ideal minimum.  Build-wise, he's more compact and "stocky" like Smitty, not skinny like Cooks or Tavon Austin or any of these other little guys compared to Smitty lately.  In his game, watch his cuts after catching a hook or a curl.  Numerous times in that video I thought I was looking at alternate universe Steve the way he caught the curl, and juked back the opposite way to pick up a lot of extra yards.  Not a jitterbug like Reggie Bush or Cooks or Austin but good elusiveness like Steve.  Good at just slipping through tackle attempts, being just out of reach to get a good hold on.  Great body control.  Hands like glue.  Very good routes.  Good at high pointing the ball, good hops for his size (though I haven't seen anything to indicate he's as quite good as Smitty at this).  From what little I could tell, seems to be a bit fiery too (though maybe I'm trying to see that one, to further the parallels).  He doesn't so much have long speed like a Cordarelle Patterson or Calvin Johnson, he's got "not gonna get caught from behind" speed and shiftyness.

In short, I'm not saying "omg guys this IS the next Steve Smith!"  But of all the WRs to come out in the past few years, I'd say he's the closest I've seen.  Like him a lot, one of my top choices at #28 if he's there (I think he could very easily be the third or fourth WR taken).

In before "Steve Smith is the next Steve Smith"

OBJ is a straight up playmaker.  If Cooks gets hyped up enough and Benj is too good to pass up for someone, Beckham could be ours for the taking and I'd love it.  I'd actually take him over both anyways if it was me making the decisionione.

You know, I agree with you and everything, but I don't think there will ever be another player like Steve Smith.. Players will come out of the draft that play similar though. Smitty is one of those legends that plays like nobody else, his style is his own.

If a player ever comes out with the same personality as Smitty I'd draft them in a second.

    • Such a dumb pick and most of us knew it Ladd would’ve been the perfect match with Bryce But instead they draft XL to fill the void at the X spot because we had a 34 year old Adam Thielen. Then a year later we draft a real X WR and move XL inside where he has absolutely no business being for a list of reasons
    • My logic was hopefully a new HC would have a LOT quicker hook for Bryce. But, that is assuming they would even be allowed. I guess that's a call to the owner's box for permission.
    • I’m not overly defending the pick. I was team Stroud by a country mile but I also knew what to expect as far as ceiling goes with Bryce  I had concerns with Bryce’s arm strength and size. Neither seem to overly be an issue. He’s proven to throw with enough anticipation that he makes up for a lack of velocity. I was worried about the way he played in college not translating to the league. Spending 8 seconds behind LOS. I did also think it would take Young a few years for him to reach his full potential. I also think he’s too smart and accurate to flat out bust which all of seems to be pretty accurate Bryce is someone you can absolutely win with. No one thought he’d be the type to carry a well below average supporting cast to a Super Bowl. He’s fully capable of giving you those 4-5 special plays a game that help your team win. And then you have those rare times where he’s the reason you win like in Atlanta.  All good teams have more than just a QB.  Even the teams that are winning this year all have a lot more than what we have. Supporting cast/defense… more than what we have  As far as Morgan goes I 100% agree. Fwiw he was legit team Bryce during the draft process. I know that for a fact. Last years draft is a complete write off. This past draft still up for debate. TMac and Scourton look solid. I can’t remember the last time I saw Princely win a rep and I’m being honest. Ransom has a little value. I think ETN is a nice insurance add. Evans could be a TE2.    I think this offseason Morgan will get aggressive with trying to land a pass rusher. Whether that’s a trade for Crosby, signing Hendrickson, it’s going to be top priority. We need a ILB. I really like Kaden Ellis. Sonny Styles should be in our draft range. We also need a tight end and it would be interesting to see this offseason with Kenyon Sadiq
