There will be at least one or more "top 20" guys slip to 28 and at least one or more "2nd round" guys go before 28, but based on who we think might be available I would go OT.  In particular, Cyrus.  He's a top 10 talent, (regardless of what's now said about injuries) was durable at Alabama, and is better than DJ Fluker, last year's #11 pick who shinned as a rookie.

Truthfully, I'm hoping Ealy drops to us! I think he will be an upgrade over CJ and it allows us to cut CJ in 2015. Meanwhile, we will have a nice NASCAR package this year in CJ-Star-Hardy-Ealy.

If Ealy doesn't drop, then BPA of CB, WR or OL. Either way, I want a WR in the first 3 rds. And at least 2 more OLmen

An upgrade over CJ?  I honestly find that doubtful.  CJ has been really, really good for us.  But hey, if we drafted him and that turned out to be the case I'd be the last one to complain about it!

Kouandjio is a huge wild card in this draft IMO.  I could see him going anywhere from top 20 to the 3rd round.  I would imagine that teams' values of him vary wildly.

fug that noise

Tough to get value when a player is stuck riding the pine. Drafting a guy with the intention of later trading him for a better pick is fool's gold at best. What if we spend the #28 pick on a QB with that intention and the guy sucks ass in the preseason (the only time he'll see the field barring injury)? Then you've completely wasted a 1st round pick on a bust who you never intended to play anyway. That's the sort of thing that gets a GM fired.

Kevin Kolb, Matt Schaub, and (to a lesser degree) Charlie Whitehurst say hi.

Neither were 1st round picks.  Neither were traded for 1st round picks.  Also, with Atlanta you had an often injured starting QB in Vick who was honestly still struggling to become an NFL caliber passer.  With Philly, McNabb was aging and I'm sure the intent was to groom Kolb as his eventual successor.

I don't see either situation all that comparable to Carolina's current situation.  But, certainly good examples of QBs that were drafted, stashed, and later traded for better value than the draft pick originally spent on them.

With his athleticism and upside, I have seen him compared to Quinn and Abraham! Plus, he has his whole career ahead of him. So, if he is "just as good" as CJ then the bargain is definitely with Ealy. CJ is coming into the twilight of his career. I think Ealy becomes just as good as CJ with potential to be better.

Fair enough.

Like I said before, I definitely don't think it's out of the question due to Hardy not being locked up long-term and CJ's mega contract.  Something is going to have to be done about CJ's deal in the coming year or two one way or another.  Whether it's a restructure/extension or outright cut.

    • https://www.yahoo.com/sports/article/versatile-2nd-db-named-panthers-154026075.html Smith-Wade's ability to play corner, nickel and safety makes him valuable to a young defense trying to rebuild after finishing last in the NFL a year ago. "Chau took advantage of an opportunity,'' coach Dave Canales said. "He made tackles. He had an opportunity on an interception, and he made it.'' Our defense has got to come alive for us to have a chance of winning our Division!
    • lol, that second part is quite literally one of the dumbest things ever. Having or not having guaranteed contracts has absolutely nothing to do with how much these billionaires have to pay.  Because there is a hard cap and a minimum cap spend requirement, and teams either use their cap or roll it over to use it all the next year, so the owners have to pay the same amount of money in the end no matter what. Having fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL would only hurt salary cap management, and thus would end up screwing over the team and its fan base when teams kiss on signings as they take up cap room that is needed to improve the roster. Look at the Browns with Watson, they gave him the fully guaranteed deal and all it’s doing is sucking up massive cap space now.  If they hadn’t done that, the owner would still be paying the same amount of money each year as that cap space would still be used elsewhere. If you want to argue for fully guaranteed contracts because the players deserve it, that’s an entirely different argument and a fair one to discuss.  But anyone against fully guaranteed deals isn’t doing it to argue for the billionaire owners.
