Jan 09 2013 05:03 PM carp24000 Carolina Panthers
CHARLOTTE - The Carolina Panthers announced Wednesday that Dave Gettleman has been named the team's general manager.

Gettleman comes to Carolina from the New York Giants where he served as the Senior Pro Personnel Analyst last season after working as Director of Pro Personnel the previous 13 years.

"I was very impressed with Dave's experience and think he will be a very good fit for our organization," Panthers Owner/Founder Jerry Richardson said. "He has an extensive background in personnel and comes from an organization in the New York Giants that I hold in high regard and played an instrumental role in their success."

I can't wait to see Gettleman out there at the combine, Draft nights, and out there wearing shorts on golf cart in Spartanburg.

Keep in mind the Panthers don't necessarily list everyone (scouts, for example, are nowhere to be found).

Wow that is a big difference.

Fashion aside, read his quotes and you'll find he's definitely a fan of Newton.

Oh yeah I have read them. I know he does. It was just my weak attempt at a joke. Everyone knows I'm not good at being funny
This is great news. Welcome Gettleman!
He's being spoken in such high regards from his old job it's refreshing to have gotten such a good gm hire. If he does bring his cap guy things are looking up. Hopefully no more doom and gloom posts. Excited
The most interesting man in the world
I all for the hire. If he can bring Hakeem Nicks back home I'd be even happier
I know nothing about him (obviously!) but the reaction on this thead tells me all I needed and wanted to know! I've noticed in tgeh past week or so that this forum has a few negative posters - and I should imagine they've got good reason to be that way. But the unanimous opinion on this is that the team has made a top decision by bringing him in.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the team is moulded to fit in with his plans and it will hopefully make the 30 odd weeks to teh start of next season that little bit more interesting!

Hopefully he will get that Chargers stench outta here.

Finally we pilfered a piece of a winning franchise to help choose our personel. It's about damn time.
Are we holding a press conference at any point?

i think they aren't even formally introducing him until next week.

probably a lot more important stuff to do.
Heck, even Bill Polian is saying this was a good hire.

well, polian did recruit him to the bills.

Polian's having a good week as his front office tree just grew with Gettleman and Telesco getting jobs.

Yeah, and they may also be waiting on a couple more front office hires that Gettleman brings in.

i actually feel better if he's waiting to learn more about the organization before he talks publicly.

one thing i don't expect is for him to be as out in the public eye as hurney was.

that might bother some, but i've got no problem with it.
La Canfora is saying on his twitter feed that with this hiring of an older GM could mean that Beane is the GM heir apparent once the time is right.
He has his work cut out for him!

Be prepared fans for at least 2 years to recover/turn around the Cap mess the Panthers are in, in 2013!
Maaaaaan, all these weeks waiting on the news of our new GM and what do you know? We make the hire randomly the day Centurylink drops the ball and says my internet went out b/c there's a short 'in the box.'

I just found out b/c my friend mentioned it in passing and I immediately became pissed that I didn't already know.

Anyway, I'm excited with all of the reviews from former peers, but I definitely am concerned about his age. I also don't prefer Beane to be the heir to the job as I would rather hire another guy like Gettleman who has a proven track record of finding and allocating talent. But, that's not a concern right now... Overall, really excited about the hire.

NOTE: If there are any typos, I am typing this on a 'smart'phone.

I highly doubt it will take that long. First we need restructure a couple of our linebackers contracts, restructure Gross, and cut Gamble(cutting Gamble alone would almost get us under the cap). Then draft CB in the first, OL in the second, and sign a good safety in FA, we'd be set. Damn how I'd love to be in Gettleman's position.
