Is Canales digging his own grave?
PNW_PantherMan replied to DaveThePanther2008's topic in Carolina Panthers
The best part is Liam Coen is literally him. Guy who did only 1 year in the exact same job and was hired way too fast by our fellow incompetent sister expansion franchise. You can't line it up any better than that in the NFL. Coen smoked Dave man. That was the big blow for me. Everything else is just confirming what that revealed for me. -

Yes, he is. 100% -
He was out coached by a HC in his first HC game this year. That's how the season started. He brought back Andy. He never has the team ready at the begining of the year. Corbett at center over Mays. Moore and Scott are still on the team. Rico behind Hubbard. Not admiting the entire team relys on the run game to not only work but excel. He isn't very good. Him picking his own QB isn't enough of an excuses to gloss over the issues.

I suspect his polished nature was the sort of thing that pushed the right buttons for a Wall Street bro like Tepper. -

Yeah but all those years are under Mr Bubble Gum Sunshine Pete Carroll. He has no other perspective other than Todd Bowles. -

He has been in the NFL since 2010 in some coaching or staff capacity. That's a fairly length of career for him to need a big learning curve. Now, I will say that not everyone learns as quickly as say a Sean McVay(7 total years as an NFL coach/staff member prior to HC). I think most likely he probably got pulled up the ranks too quickly from OC to HC. He probably needed to be in the position for several more years to even determine if he was adept that at. -
Probably. Hes a bullshit artist. This Dowdle thing has made me lose the glimpse of hope i had.

I can’t make you a great meal without the right groceries. Him not fixing Bryce is no surprise to me, as I didn’t consider it a realistic proposition to start with. My vision at the time was well he’ll show that Bryce can’t be fixed and then will get down to business with a better candidate.

Well Ron did have a 9 year playing career that cannot be understated. But he was an NFL coach/staff member in some capacity for about 13 years before taking our HC job, 6 as a DC. By comparision, DC has been an NFL coach/staff member in some capacity for 14 years prior to taking our HC job, only 1 as an OC. So, in theory, Dave really shouldn't be super far behind the curve when compared to Ron. Although, I think Ron obviously had a much better grasp of what it takes to be a successful NFL player/Coach. -
I don’t know where the QB is going to come from but with a decent vet he won’t need three years. I’d say we should try and trade for one but haven’t given it any real though to say if there is even one out there that fits that scenario. But I would rather give up big picks for a proven commodity that what we did with Bryce.

I hope he can figure it out. He probably got the job a year or two before he was ready. I am not sure he is even fully in control of the defense. The rico thing, the QB room, not enough in game adjustments; like the buffalo game. Somebody should have tried something different to stop that toss sweep. He was already standing in the open grave when he took this job from dave tepper. The question is whether dave is going to give him enough rope to get out of the grave hole or is he going to hit him over the head with the shovel and bury him. -

During the hiring process one of the reasons, he was selected was he was a QB whisperer and that he could get Young to be our franchise QB. While we have seen some amazing improvement in Young he hasn't gotten him over the hump. -
Of course not. Like I said. Ron was way more experienced coming in. That’s why he had a better record. He still had to figure things out to make the jump to 10+. I don’t know if DC will make it. His lack of experience around the league may be a big problem for him. 7 years with Pete Carrol and then one year in Tampa. Not a lot of reference points to draw from.

I'm All In On Drafting a QB in Round 1
LinvilleGorge replied to Daddy_Uncle's topic in Carolina Panthers
It's a sad reality that the Panthers would've honestly been better off over the past several years to make major decisions via Huddle poll than going with the decisions they actually made. People say "oh, you think you know more than the professionals?" No, I don't. I know that. That's why it's so baffling watching them making obvious huge blunders in real time. -

Ron's two seasons he took to figure it out would be massive successes compared to the 2018-Present period. Those 6 and 7 win seasons look pretty great now. Do you honestly think he will jump up to a 10+ win year in 2026? That's what Ron did. -
I disagree, a lot of people on here have said their opinions on signees, draftees, coaching hires, who to play etc and have made better decisions than the front office. Not saying they could run a team, but they seem to be better armchair GMs than our current regime the last 6 years.

Not Necessarily Panthers Related but....

You might want to look at that table again. Round 2 has the least QB's taken in that time period. What is more interesting is how the "darts at a dart board" happens in the 6th and 7th round. Those are the 2nd and 3rd most frequently drafted rounds for NFL QB's. If you are strictly using my criteria for "success" it does lend credence to that not being an awful strategy. At 17-21% chance to get a bare minimum of 30+ starts OR a 5+ year career. That's pretty good for a very throwaway pick. I don't know how that would compare to other positions. I would maybe have to adapt what I have done to something like PFR's Career AV to set a line that accomplished roughly the same result as I have from the spreadsheet. If I can get to a number value, applying this to each position wouldn't be that hard. Not sure how "fair" that is without making some adjustment based on averages for each position. I would have to do that as well, I think. A positional "handicap" of sorts. -

While I agree he should have the opportunity to select his own qb, following that does he then get the standard 3 years? New regimes mean new qbs. No coach should tie his future to someone they didn't actually pick. For whatever reason, Canales has done just that. Whether it is being strong armed by Tepper, or overwhelming hubris that he could be successful with Young, it sure seems he has now made his bed. -

One of the benefits of doing a few stints as a coordinator is working under different head coaches and observing how they do things. Canales has worked under Pete Caroll and then he was an OC for 1 season. Honestly I think he needs more time in the oven and he might be good at his next HC gig. I'm not sure he's ready for this job and I don't know that he will ever be. But hey I hope I'm wrong. -
Last Sunday the Bills came to town and took the Panthers manhood. McDermott made Canales his bitch.
-
I suspect regardless of QB playing you will see 3+ total TO's from the QB position versus one of the past pass rushing attacks in the NFL and a very weakened offensive line.

Jon Snow replied to kungfoodude's topic in Carolina Panthers
More qbs are taken in rounds 1 and 2 and the success rate will be higher as the supposed top guys are gone before round 3. That is always a given. After round 2 it's just pure luck to find a long term starter. That has always been the case. Im not sure you will find anything new there. -

I think he was hoping that Chuba would play his way out of his poor play but its just been getting worse and worse. its not like this is new, I remember the same feud about Steven Davis and Deshawn Foster. rarely do things work out as well as Williams and Stewart -
Last Sunday our boys brought a big bag of iron pyrite to the cash window, and were aggressively escorted off the property by grown ass men. I expect no different against GB.
