Different perspective for not starting the starters in preseason...
ForJimmy replied to musicman's topic in Carolina Panthers
Canales said he is trying to limit injuries and sort out the depth. He also stated the joint practice went well enough that he felt comfortable holding most starters. I don’t think it’s some secret offense or hiding Bryce. I think it’s literally what the coach is saying. -
Word on the street is Nicole Tepper is having them lie about Lamar Jackson’s injury because his name makes fans think of the Ravens QB which takes attention away from Bryce. More to come later…
-
Now you got it! I think Tepper had him cut! Always meddling!
-
Maybe you didn't know that Johnson scored a preseason TD against the Jets 3rd string defense!
-
RB room looks like Chuba, Miles, Brooks, and Blackshear. I think Boone was even ahead of Johnson. Maybe we can stash him on the PS, but we just don't have a spot for him on the roster.

What is the benefit to benching starters for the preseason?
ForJimmy replied to hepcat's topic in Carolina Panthers
I’d say DC gets several plus years like Rhule did. He got to bring in his own staff too. People who have worked with/under him before. Frank did not and that’s one of the reasons it got so toxic. Sure if Bryce gets hurt early we probably still look at a QB if an upgrade is there, but it will be tough to decide on what’s an upgrade. We need to evaluate him this year so we can make a clear decision next year. -

I'd say it's way too early for that. Even the backup OL looked better this past game than last year. We paid out for 2 proven OGs and yeah C may need some work but Corbet can block if he can hike the ball correctly. I'm just not buying the another 17 games may not be enough for Bryce. If he looks as bad or worst after 33 games played that's it. It's gets grey if Bryce gets injured or if Bryce looks better but to what degree. He gets injured in preseason and we are sitting in the exact same situation next year. Again I don't think the few extra reps in preseason will have this huge change of outcomes on the season. We may start off slow sure, but I'm 90% sure that's happening regardless. -

When they get reps in preseason it typically isn't enough to equate to one game. So yeah they probably will start off slow (kind of figured they would regardless), but even with that 17 games should be enough assuming he is healthy. That's less than one game of practice he will be missing. The counter to this argument is if we do play Young in preseason and he gets hurts and misses a chunk (if not all) of the season. We would still not have a good evaluation on him. Imagine if he comes back for the last couple games and plays better. Do we roll with him again? I think Canales wants his OL healthy before he inserts Bryce to start rolling out this offense. I don't necessarily agree with it or not, but it makes a little sense. -

Yeah this is what DC said in week one. Joint practice gives you reps and limits injuries. He wants to evaluate our depth and keep our guys healthy. It’s a trade off. -

https://x.com/JFowlerESPN/status/1825147136037601456 We made him an offer. Sounds like the Vikings came on stronger. I wonder if we go after another CB now? Adore Jackson could be a good upgrade.

Route running, separation, blocking. Basically everything but catching. I think Dalton would have received a lot of reps had he not been injured/recovering. I don’t get why Luton didn’t get more reps than Plummer. He has shown to be a better choice for QB3 if we even keep 3.
-
I think some of these are backups to the backups. Looks like the Jets are doing the same though.
-
Sanders will be interesting with his upgraded OL, but I doubt Prime lets him play here…
-
Honestly Dalton would probably have played last game some and this one if he wasn’t injured. He is a good one to put out there to really grade the other players on offense trying to make the team IMO. He will give them a chance and not poo the bed.
-
Where did you read that as anyone not wanting a good QB? The wait and see people typically won’t want him if he continues to struggle. Last year was just tough to grade anyone on offense. If he stinks it up he will lead us to the pick to replace him. This year should be better because we actually have a first to fall back on if we completely suck again.

Yeah all the Bryce “stans” went into hiding. I think we have people on here who want them to eat crow but since they are gone, they will lump any neutral position into that category in order to gloat. I’ve seen very few claim Bryce is the answer lately. There are some that want to see how he looks in better circumstances before writing him off. There are some that are extremely skeptical (probably the largest group) and there are a select few that either don’t like him or just really want their original opinion validated at all cost.

The Jets Joint Practice Thread: HOT Take Edition
ForJimmy replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
It can buy the staff some time telling the public they are better than they are sure. I don’t think anyone is falling for that again. No one is expecting us to be great this time. My point is it had little actual effect on our season. It just let them raise expectations a little longer, but I don’t see this staff doing that. DC isn’t talking about hiding playbooks. He is talking about ironing out the depth chart and trying to keep players healthy. He is basically saying our depth isn’t great, he wants to figure it out and we could really be screwed if a couple of starters get hurt. -

“We approached preseason last year like it didn't matter and we had it all figured out. That ended up in us handing the #1 overall pick to Chicago to get DJ Moore a QB.” That is the quote I was originally responding to. It’s in this thread and they aren’t the only person to say something like this. My point is a lot more went into us sucking that out preseason approach. Hence why we sucked just as bad in week 18 as week 1. The reps could have helped sure, but we got plenty of regular season reps with very little progress. It was just a poo show. -

I mean yeah we probably aren’t going to be great this year. We can give the starters more reps in the preseason, but we have a talent issue compared to most other rosters and that can’t really change in the immediate future. -

We know now that last year was a poo show. That has happened. Playing more starters in the preseason would not have changed that. So when people say look at last year it’s a moot point. Preseason didn’t cause us to suck. We sucked all year long with 17 games worth of live regular season reps.
