Updated Cap for 2023 after the CMC trade……
UNCrules2187 replied to WarPanthers89's topic in Carolina Panthers
Cut/trade Shaq and you get to $10m in space. After that, just need to decide how, if at all, active they want to be in FA. Simple base year salary restructures of Moore and Moton would open up an additional ~$14m or ~$10m respectively. If you don’t want to do any restructures, extending Burns and bringing next year’s cap hit down from $16m to $6-8m would also work. We’ll swallow the dead cap pain this year and next. Easier said than done, but if we hit on the next coach and rookie QB, Panthers will be set up well to make noise in 2024 -

Lol not at all. The Eagles won the SB in 2018, blew it up after 2019, and went back to the playoffs in 2021 and are SB contenders in 2022. Playoffs in year 2 of a rookie HC/QB regime and contention in year 3 is absolutely doable provided you get those two right.

We pretty much have to take a RB on day 2 in the draft, right?
UNCrules2187 replied to t96's topic in Carolina Panthers
I will be shocked if we use a day 2 pick on a RB. Much bigger needs after we use the #1 pick on QB. Need WR/EDGE/TE over RB. Grab a mid-round back or sign a vet in FA. -
I mean that’s obvious. Every owner has final say on HC decisions.

I would try to offload Shaq and maybe Donte. No one else should be moved.
-
I would not be surprised if Shaq and Donte are moved before the deadline for mid-round picks. Maybe a 5th for Shaq and a 4th for Donte. Could definitely see the Commanders going after one of the two.

It's not like Robbie needs to learn the offense for tonight...just throw him out there on 10-15 snaps on go routes and take a couple shots to see if he can outrun his coverage.

Panthers "listening" on Shaq Thompson also
UNCrules2187 replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Anyone who's thinking you're getting more than maybe a 4th for Shaq is insane. Front offices are balking at giving up a late 1st for a superstar talent like CMC, why the fug would they give up a 2nd or 3rd round pick for an aging, slightly above average off ball LB? LB is probably tied with RB as the two most devalued positions in football. -

I think he's the definition of average. Maybe slightly above replacement level. He consistently gets dinged up and misses a couple of games a year. He doesn't bring much as a pass rusher and his coverage skills are overrated (he averages ~4-5 passes defensed a season and has 3 career picks in 106 games). I absolutely think a 4th round LB (e.g. Brandon Smith who we drafted in the 4th this past year) could probably give you 80% of what Shaq does while bringing more pass rush juice. -

At the end of the day, while I think Shaq is a fine OLB, I think it's prudent for the Panthers to deal him if they're going to get a 4th/conditional 5th (or better obviously). This season is already done so not having him isn't going to impact a playoff race. Cutting him in the offseason is going to net $13m in cap space even with the dead money hit. If you can get some draft compensation for him from a team like the Commanders, Packers, or Bills (not even sure if the Bills need LB help), it's worth it because it allows the team to throw Brandon Smith in the line-up and gives the FO 10-11 games to decide if they've got something with him or if they need to dedicate potentially a day 2 pick on a replacement going forward. -

Shaq's base next year is ~$12.2m so it's more like $13m for 1.5 seasons. Dead cap doesn't matter honestly, might as well take the poison in this lost year because he's likely to be cut in the offseason if he doesn't take a drastic pay cut anyway. -

Shaq to Washington for their 2023 4th. Let's make it happen.
