Charlotte...Not a football city?

Recommended Posts

Charlotte still has some work to do as a sports town but it's getting better. The real problem here is obviously all the transplants down here from upstate NY and Ohio...but that's to be expected. If I moved to Seattle tomorrow I would still carry my team with me. But what really grinds my gears are the people that are born and raised in NC yet claim to be "die hard" Steelers, Cowboys, Redskins fans etc. People like that hillbilly moron from Lincolnton who calls WFNZ 3x a day talking about the Steelers and duke. That idiot probably can't find the state of Pennsylvania on a map.

Carolina has been consistently in the top top 8 in average home attendance over the past 10 years.

This is a common example of some jackwagon not doing any research before spewing out garbage.

I mean, I go to 4-5 games a year and those seasons when they were winning 2-7 games consistently...it wasn't too difficult to find a cheap ticket. Even now when I go, I usually have no problem sitting where ever I want up top. So there's a little truth to what he said but Charlotte is still trying to find an identity as a sports town and there's a lot of transplants down here. That doesn't help. Neither does having 2 pro franchises that for the most part haven't been very good. But we are certainly a better sports town than anywhere in Florida and other places. And for his little "ghost town" comment..I mean come on dude...when any team is having a shitty season your attendance and interest will decrease.

According to ESPN, the Panthers were 6th in average home attendance in 2010 when we went 2-14.

Average home attendance ranking per ESPN since 2007

2007- 6th

2008- 6th

2009- 6th

2010- 6th

2011- 7th

2012- 6th

2013- 8th

Not to defend thr guy, but I dont believe that takes into account that we have Psl's. Its the same reason we havent had a "blackout" game in a long time because the franchise "sells out" even if the fans dont show up. Its why owners love a psl idea

lol those are not actual gate numbers. That is just our stadium size with a PSL sellout every week.

well wfnz does give airtime to a cowboys fan whose gimmick is taking a poo on the panthers and their fans every day

that's WFNZs entire programming agenda. There's honestly nobody on that station with any real credibility and all the shows are designed around callers. It's a case of inmates running the asylum and the "host" is just keeping score between fanbases.

I've said this a lot in the college bball sub here - but DJ Stout, the programming directors, etc absolutely LOVE an opportunity to kick the tarheels and talk poo on them. The obvious reason is that they are all jealous dookies, but the REAL reason is because it generates ratings. Most of the state are tarheel fans and all it takes is for some idiot hillbilly dookie/state fan to call in after UNC loses and their entire show is set for the day. UNC obviously has a very dedicated, passionate fan base and they will gladly load up the lines to defend their team. UNC = ratings. It's the same reason why they drag out race/ethnicity discussion for 3-4 days. Race talk = ratings.

    • We're in alignment regarding Thielen not being a game changer/breaker for the Panthers. Getting the ball into hands of playmakers like TMac and XL is going to open up things more than it is getting it to Thielen underneath (or letting him go after 50/50 balls 20yds downfield in his mid-30s). However, in a room where the other guys are two second year guys and two rookies, having a reliable vet that they can learn from is just as important as it is for the QB to have as a reliable third option. I can see that being worth $8.5M (just 3%) of the $279.2M cap... especially when looking at what's left out there: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/_/position/wr However, the idea that the team is forcing production to Thielen and leading to losses isn't supported by the data. Targets, not receiving yards, are how you can tell if a player is being "force fed." In the two games mentioned, let's look at the other players available... vs. TB 10 targets - Adam Thielen 9 targets - David Moore 8 targets - Tommy Tremble, Xavier Legette 3 targets - Jonathon Brooks 1 target - Dan Chisena, Feleipe Franks, Stephen Sullivan vs. PHI 11 targets - Adam Thielen 8 targets - Xavier Legette 5 targets - Chuba Hubbard, David Moore 2 targets - Tommy Tremble 1 target - Ja'Tavion Sanders, Deven Thompkins There isn't exactly a bounty of other names to throw the ball to. In those games, AT was one of the top 2 WRs. Diontae had been gone by that point.   So... yea. Agreed that Thielen isn't exactly carrying the team in his mid-30s, but it's undeniable that he was the most reliable target last season that still has quite a bit of value this season. Whether or not that value is reflected in a manner folks think on the contract is going to come down to personal taste. However, the idea that the team was forcing production to AT and that was the reason behind some losses couldn't be further from the truth.
    • I would also add that I think it's more than money.  AT has looked absolutely miserable out there at times, and there was a lot of speculation he would demand to be traded.  Personally, I thought he was a lock to be moved last year.  Maybe his hamstring is the only thing that prevents that from happening. The fact that he's not only willing to come back and play, but excited about it, really bodes well for Bryce.  AT is a veteran and he knows the game.  If he didn't have confidence in Bryce, I guarantee you he wouldn't be in a Panther uniform this year.  I'll take that as a positive.
