Who would hurt us the most if they don't have a big year in 2014.

Question: why does it cost the team money when a player retires? Aren't they choosing not to fulfill the remainder of their obligation? It's not they're being cut where the team makes the choice

Kalil isn't even 30 yet and centers can play until their late 30s, eg Matt birk. I don't think we need to worry about kalil right now he was first team all pro last year. We have way too many issues to think about his replacement at this stage.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think that it's right to sit on your tail and get paid for production that hasn't come for years, but that's why Godfrey actually taking a pay cut should be commended.

He would have been cut if he didn't take Gettlemans new deal.

Because the money is already payed when the contact was signed. Had the contract been no signing bonus and no guaranteed base salary, there is no dead money when the player retires.

Look at it this way.

Player G, a veteran still playing at pro bowl level at a very important pass protection position want to play one more year only. His market value is $10M.

He signs a $10M one year contract. Cap hit is $10M. He tries after the year. No dead money.

If he instead signs a 5 year vet minimum non guaranteed contact with a $10M signing bonus. He get the $10M in the bank the first year, cap hit is roughly $2.5M ($10M spread on 5 years is $2M a year plus about $500K in salary). He retired after one year.

In both cases G has been payed $10M after one year. But in the second case, the cap his has only been $2.5M. So the remaining difference between money actually payed and cap hit observed hits the cap when the contract is broken (if the player retires or are cut/traded) so the teams cannot avoid cap hit with the second type of contacts.

In 2014 it will be the QB. In 2015 it will be the QB. 2016, 17, and 18? Still the QB.

After this year when Cam gets his new big contract it will be Cam from a production and financial cost point of view. Hands down.  Hopefully the ankle surgery is wildly successful and helps him play at an even higher level.

Deangelo Williams and that is enough said, if the Panthers want to get back to the Playoffs they have to run the ball. One promising rookie Receiver along with a couple seasoned vets in Avant and Cotchery isn't going to magically fix everything, by that I mean Cam can't just drop back 30 times a game it can't happen that way. Avant and Cotchery are good to coach up the young buck but Carolina has gotta get a good season from Deangelo.

True, but he still saved us money. People talk about Godfrey as though he was straight up trash.  He wasn't. He took a drastic pay cut to remain on the team, and I think we'll be a more secure backfield because of it.

Cam obviously.

The better question is who's play would help is the most if they step up and play at a pro bowl level? To that I'd probably say whoever ends up being our #1 receiver or LT.

Deangelo, nothing.  If we're going to have a successful attempt at the playoffs we have to have a good season from the offensive line.  The blocking hasn't been there for years now for the backs and considering what we have there still I'm not too hopeful.  And we even lost a key component and may lose another with Wharton!

I would honestly really be okay with a nothing-but-wrs-and-offensive line draft.

    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
