Grantland: 2009, the worst draft ever

Good read. What the hell was in the water that year?

The most egregious moves of that draft, though, are those that had the most lasting effect on draft-day strategy. Teams have become warier than ever of trading away future first-round picks to move up for players they want. Alphonso Smith and Everette Brown are the reasons why. The Broncos traded away their 2010 first-rounder to get Smith with the 37th pick. He’s currently out of the league. Carolina gave away its 2010 first-round pick to San Francisco in order to grab Brown at 43. He has seven career sacks. That future first-rounder became Mike Iupati.

Man, why was Aaron Curry so bad? He was a beast in college, I guess he just didn't have It in the NFL.

There will never ever ever be a "sure thing" in the draft. Every pick, no matter who it is, will make a self respecting GM rack their brain on whether or not they are actually a good investment. If you do lose sight of that, well every once in a while you get reminded of that inconvenient truth when an Aaron Curry comes along

Everette Brown was a top 10 pick....in the draft guides that come out before the combine and pro days..

I am almost positive Hurney used these to draft. I have a guide where Everette Brown and Duke Robinson are both on the cover as the stars of the draft. We drafted both lol..

seeing as how Hardy was the only good player we got out of that entire draft then no, it didn't really balance out

2009 and 2010 drafts combined we got hardy, munnerlyn, lafell and 14 other guys that were completely useless (also trading away the 33rd pick in the 2011 draft in the process)

    • I would write “give remmers tight end help” on a yellow sticky note and stuck it in shulas playbook the night before superbowl 50.
    • And don’t worry about Bryce he will be great… Peyton Manning had a horrible rookie year too 😂
    • Nothing wrong with it at all until you start telling others they are bad fans or not fans. But you are the good fan because you never say negative stuff about the team.    I did many years of that type of uninformed fanning because there really was no info and coverage like there is with the internet.    I mean, I used to go to the store and get Street and Smith’s annual football issue. That was about the extent of what you could get if you didn’t live in a big city with sportswriters covering and reporting.  There was no video to look at or replay the games and if you didn’t live in the market you could only rarely see your football team play.    TI have fanned since being a kid in the early 1960s, and as late as 1995 - ‘97 I lived in Atlanta and good luck getting more than 3 or 4 games a year on TV. No radio either. No print coverage outside of an AP recap and box unless they played Atlanta.  People today that have always had the network connection don’t know.    I wasn’t very educated about the Panthers until I finally got internet.
