Kelvin Benjamin - The Right Pick

David Gettleman and the Carolina Panthers got it right.

Kelvin Benjamin was both the best player available and also filled a huge need at wide receiver. And when I say huge, I mean that literally.

Benjamin instantly becomes for the Panthers what we all hoped Brandon Lafell would turn out to be. A tough jump ball receiver that we could rely on in the red zone in addition to tough third down passes. Benjamin won't be burning many players with his speed, but has a fantastic ability to extend his body and make the catch.

The most important thing: He has all of the physical tools that cannot be taught.

The challenge now is for wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl to mold this young man into a formidable NFL caliber receiver. Proehl, who up until now has had only marginal young talent to develop now gets the keys to a Ferrari. I doubt there is anyone more excited at Bank of America Stadium this morning than Ricky.

Under Proehl's tutelage, Benjamin will develop into that safety outlet that Cam has never had. A guy that Cam can throw the ball high and in the general direction of when under pressure and know there is a good chance Kelvin has got it.

The Moose to Cam's Jake.

If Benjamin can improve on his focus (3 drops vs Florida) and his route running, he will have an immediate positive impact this season for the Panthers. This is exactly what the Panthers needed with their first rounder.

Well done.

I was skeptical until I saw the press conference from Gettelman where they said they did their due diligence and got the right guy.  Of course I kind of knew it when we raced to the podium to get him as if someone could nab him before we could pick him.

I am excited about this.

How do you know NFL teams had a first round grade on him?

Oh that's right you don't.

So do you just like to argue or do you actually want to have a discussion. I think it is the former so I won't waste my time but as others have told you, not everyone with a first round grade gets picked in the first while others who do get picked may not be universally accepted as a first round talent.  With teams often getting 1 pick per round it isn't as if they get everyone they want.  They have to pick and chose who they want and often guys who they would like in the first get passed over because they have a bigger need elsewhere.  That still doesn't mean they were not worthy or going in the first round.  If you can't understand that, there isn't anything else I can say that would matter so I won't waste my time.

Gettleman said he had up to 10 receivers with first round grades on them and not 10 were chosen so obviously he wouldn't agree with your logic either.

It isnt rocket science lol

Apparently to 4 corners it is.  Then again if his screen name was taken from the basketball formation whose intent is to slow things down it might explain why he seems to have a hard time understanding what we are saying.

It is obvious he is trolling. Not worth the time.

The only concern I have is his apparent easy drops. Drops happen to everybody, but we had too many last year between Ginn deep bombs, Smitty slant in Arizona, and LaFell drop on fourth down and more. Hope he cleans that up.

That said, great, great great pick and right choice. This will really help our redzone game, in particular against teams like Seattle and 49'ers. (I still haven't gotten over the redzone struggles from last years San Fran game)

He really only played for 2 seasons so he is still raw and learning.  I suspect he will do better as he goes along and should make big improvement just like cam did his first few years.

It may not be rocket science but evaluating players is difficult. If it weren't, every swinging dick from a message board would have a job with an NFL team.

You bozos are saying Robinson was a "first round" talent but have yet to produce any evidence that he was.

"raw" and "learning" - the dude is about to be 24.
