Missouri's Kony Ealy frustrated Texas A&M's Jake Matthews

Getting under Jake Matthews' skin isn't an easy task.

The former Texas A&M left tackle and soon-to-be first-round NFL draft pick keeps an even keel on the field and frustrates opponents with every tool a pass protector needs: size, athleticism and technique. But on the last night of college football's regular season last year, it was Missouri defensive end Kony Ealy doing the frustrating.

"There was a lot of trash-talking," Ealy said, according to stltoday.com. "Both of us. And that's not like him, so I took him out of his comfort zone."

Ealy's stat line against the Aggies was strong if not spectacular (four tackles, one for loss, and a quarterback hurry), but he played well enough to draw Matthews' praise when asked about his toughest assignment.

"I thought Kony Ealy was really good at Missouri," Matthews said. "Real aggressive. Big and strong. Mixed up his pash-rush moves real well."

Helping Ealy through months of pre-draft preparation has been his cousin, former Missouri defensive tackle and current New York Jet Sheldon Richardson.

"Sheldon's been great," Ealy said. "He's been kind of a big brother, mentor to me, just trying to help me through this process -- not knowing what to expect."

Kony was also the second fastest DE in this years draft 4.8 40 time behind Clowneys ridiculous 4.47 and was 2nd on mayocks DE draft board also.  He has a Freeney like spin move that is awesome to watch but difficult to defend.  He also is GREAT against the run and has an explosive first step.

Eh I wouldn't say he's great against the run.

He over pursues quite a bit and fails to set the edge a lot of the times letting the back get outside.

Most have said that he's a much better pass rusher than he is a run-defender.

He's got a little work to do against defending the run.

The great thing about this pick is that Ealy is going to get to sit back and learn.

He might get 12-15 snaps a game with most of them of passing downs, so he'll definitely be fresh meaning we don't have to worry about his motor and inconsistency.

I also think his potential is through the roof and most everything that you would want to coach out of him or coach in him, you should be able to because it's technique related not intangible or overall skill related.

    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
