We didn't do Cam any favors, and if this is it we're gonna have some problems

I put more time and effort into this draft than any other because I was excited about the fact that this draft purportedly being as deep at WR than it has been in years (and possibly ever if you believe some), as well as having a solid stable of OTs as well according to all the analysts, execs, and talking heads.  I was stoked, eagerly perusing all of this information.  I mean it was like the perfect storm, the draft was full of high level prospects that fit our needs, but lo and behold we only come out with one WR and no tackles.  That's somewhat of a bitter pill to swallow.  

 

I know that I am not a GM, and I know that intellectually Dave Gettleman knows a hell of a lot more than I do about building a football team, but his philosophy of drafting the BPA at all costs is a big old horse pill that you look at and wonder how the fug you're going to get that down your throat.  I mean, value is wonderful, especially when thinking long term, but what about now?  Regardless of any real or perceived differences in team building, it seems to me that a philosophy that has you draft players at a position of strength in lieu of players that may be perceived as marginally less talented at a position of weakness doesn't necessarily take balance into account.  Moreover, it's almost like you have to get lucky to even achieve that balance needed to be successful---whether short or long term---and win championships.  

 

It was widely regarded that we needed to draft an LT because we were weak at the position, and I don't believe that all the G-man-speak in the world about Bell and/or Chandler is changing that opinion. I said opinion, because it is not a fact.  What is a fact is that their play left a lot to be desired last year (especially Bell's...my goodness).  It was also widely regarded that we have a group of threes and fours at wide receiver who may not even see the field much on some clubs (especially the top ones).  Thankfully we drafted a WR in the first with some upside, and we can only hope that Benjamin can hit the ground running and at least give us an 800-1000 yard effort this year (knowing our limited pass offense), but even G-man has admitted to the fact that receivers rarely come in and make an immediate impact, not to mention that receivers rarely break out until really year three.  Benjamin is raw as it is, so I am not going to hold my breath, so the smart bet is to temper your expectations that he is going to come in and do an A.J. Green or a Keenan Allen.

 

Regardless of all the whys, debates and arguments over philosophical differences, at the end of the day, Cam Newton is going to have to rely on great big question marks to protect his blind side, and some WR3s and WR4s to at least "hold serve" until Benjamin gets to speed and/or the young question marks at WR do the same and pleasantly shock the world with their play making and game changing ability.  

 

Don't get me wrong, it looks like our defense will be stronger (it better). Our D-line will be our saving grace, and in theory our ball hawking defensive backfield should be able to benefit from the guys up front. But, offensively we are still taking our chances, and as a result the team is unbalanced.  We weren't able to (for whatever reasons) fill glaring needs during free agency on the O-line, and we didn't upgrade our receiving corp as well as I'd have liked (which in theory gives you the freedom to draft the BPA, and not for need).  I realize that free agency isn't technically over, but it would be nice if G-man pulls a rabbit out of his hat.  

 

At this point there appears to be no yin and yang. Cam is going to have to overcompensate for an offense peppered with a couple of guys who aren't necessarily fit to protect him, a couple of older vets and a journeyman at WR who are WR3-4 hybrids, a TE who may have to bare the burden of being the number 1 receiver again, another TE who has suspect hands, and a bunch of young question marks at wide receiver who we've been told have some potential.  

 

I hope it all turns out well.

I said it once and ill say it again. Im not quite sure I agree with the whole draft BPA over need mindset. Ok so we get Ealy, great. Hes a

BPA. The problem is, hes not seeing the field anytime soon. Sure hes "leverage" but so what? We still have a oline in shambles.

Say im shopping for a car, Im a family man with three kids. I have the choice of a SUV or a porsche. Well using my BCA strategy (best car avaliable) im getting the porsche because BCA overrides all! Nevermind the fact I bought a 2 seater coupe when I have a wife and three kids that still dont have anywehre sit.

So we got our porsche in Ealy. Unfortunatley Cam is the kid left out in the cold because there isnt enough room for him in my porsche.

I actually think our WR corps is a little better this year. That is assuming of course that KB will produce better than 745 yards and 4 TDs which I am confident he will do.  He may have less yards but I expect a bigger TD number.  Cotchery, Avant, Underwood are an upgrade from Lafell, Ginn and Dixon.  These 3 guys are more reliable in the pass catching department.  Add in our leading receiver from last year, Olsen, and I think we have a decent little group. 

 

**All of this doesn't take into account our Oline which definitely plays a large part in protecting Cam but if we are talking about just the WR group I think it's an upgrade.**

I expect more than just over the top responses JOAT.  I have never called for firing G-man, much less killing him.  I guess if I tell you you're G-man's groin sniffer that  your response would make more sense.  But, i know you're better than that.

Tldr we are fine Cam is fine and our O will undoubtedly be better than last year.
