Preseason #1: NY Giants

Recommended Posts

Ok, quit reading Twitter for five minutes and talk to me about a week from tonight. What players are you excited about seeing get some reps? What kind of playcalling experiments are we gonna see? Whose third string is stronger, ours or the G-men? What are we gonna learn coming out of this game?

For starters, the Giants have a lot of questions at wide reciever and will probably be looking to give their new or inexperienced wide-outs as much legitimate game time as possible before the regular season starts. So even though New York is typically a run-heavy offense, are we gonna see a lot of passing situations? And would that be a good thing?

C'mon, Panther football is right around the corner dammit!

I would like to see us do something like the fake punt the Titans did lastnight.Did we have any trick plays last year?

Last preseason was more of a focus on seeing what the run game was capable of. Not a whole lot of experimentation. With greater solidarity in the offensive starters this year, I would expect a few more chances will be taken this year.

Everyone does fake punts in the preseason and never in the regular season

Faked kick or punt plays are too inconsistent to be much more than a gimmick in the regular season. Sign of a weak coaching staff if you ask me.

I agree that watching the wide receivers will be big for me and I also can't wait to see Kenneth Moore in a game situation, he has great hands and runs good routes. I also will be interested in seeing Barnidge and Goodson as they have the most hype coming into the first preseason game. On defense I will be looking at the defensive tackle situation obviously because I don't feel comfortable with Nick Hayden after seeing him at fan fest, I really think we need to trade or sign a released player if we can. I will also keep a close eye on the corners, not much has been said about CJ Wilson or Sherrod Martin and they will play a big role this year. Personally I thought Wilson was sharp at fan fest while Martin seems to still be learning the position, which is understandable. I think Munnerlyn will be fine which leads me to my final point of interest which is the returners. I really think Goodson will excel at kickoff returns and give us a Michael Bates type field position. For the punt returners I pulling for Kenneth Moore because that would solidify his spot on the roster but I also like Robinson's ability before the injury (not sure if he is has the same explosiveness), and then there is Beavers who has a lot of speed and has done good things in the return game at the college level. One more thing, I really would like to see them play a good game. The HOF game was really sloppy at times and I hope we look better than Buffalo. I think that the preseason always gives an idea of how well we will play during the season, at least for the Panthers.

I have that saved from before it was taken off youtube. I love that play. it was awesome.

Indeed. That was one of the most well-timed, well-executed interceptions I've seen, and totally unexpected. Loved it.

Like many, I'm looking forward to seeing who steps up at defensive tackle in the preseason.

I also want to see how our receivers look, and who has the most success in the return game. I was excited about watching Lee given all of the early hype -- blazing speed, big guy, Canada's best -- but after seeing him at Fan Fest and reading reviews about him at training camp, I don't think he'll make the team.

Of course, Goodson should be fun to watch. And Munnerlyn. And Taylor. I think we're going to have a great pass rush this year. :)

The reporter asks a good question, especially in light of all the Jalen Ramsey rumors.  To me, the big questions concerned depth players Evans and Bartholomew.  As for the UDFA, I have been waiting to hear about Thornton and Reid, but there does not seem to have been a lot of urgency to draft a CB or bring in a free agent.  Morgan basically re-signed Jackson and locked up Horn.  A few highlights from the article: Canales mentioned Evans, Bartholomew, and Thornton by name.  He seems satisfied that Evans and Bartholomew are the key reserves.  Thornton, based on reading tea leaves about his comments, has flashed, but might be on the outside looking in.  Personally, in the limited action Evans and Bartholomew played last season, I was optimistic, and it seems Canales feels the same. He mentions that Smith-Wade is playing inside and outside.  If he steps up, that is good news.  It seems as though they really like Jackson because Canales seemed to focus on CB depth in his answer.  Coaches have to be careful answering questions like this one--If the coach mentions your name, great, but if he does not, it hurts morale.  If he says, "We'd like to upgrade the position" it can also hinder motivation.   Canales did not mention SDSU CB Mike Reid. IN RELATED NEWS I recently read that the Canales likes the battle between Ransom and Richardson for the other safety position beside Moehrig.  Not sure we will be upgrading that position at this time. Remember, the DBs play better when the front 7 plays better. PROJECTED DB ROSTER ENTERING CAMP CB: Horn, Jackson, Smith-Wade, Bartholomew, Evans--Practice Squad Candidates:  Thornton, Reid S: Moehrig, Ransom, Richardson, xxxxxx- I expect Henderson, Gifford, or Thomas (all UDFAs) will battle Scott for the final safety position.
    • Yet the lyrics in their music has a "bad" word every other word.
    • Richardson availablity is hindering his development. I liked him as well and thought a good QB coach could help him.  I am glad they didn't take my advice. 😀
