Steelers DC Dick LeBeau on Cam: “He’s the quintessential modern QB”

Dick LeBeau on Cam:

They started like 1-3 last year and then maybe ran off eight or nine straight games and I think you can chart that right to their quarterback. He just kind of took over and said we’re not going to lose. And that’s the way he was in college. He’s a special athlete and he makes them tick. He can keep plays alive. He’s a much better passer than maybe people give him credit for. But he can do it all and he’s a big guy.

...

He can throw the pocket balls but I would never call him a pocket passer. They put him back there with a couple guys and they run the read-option (and) the pistol stuff. He’s the quintessential modern quarterback. He can do both.

yeah, this wasn't just pregame opposing coach speak. this sounds like actual respect based on real knowledge.

of course a good bit of that turnaround had also to do with rivera and keek and their respective impacts on the team. cam is a great motivator, but he's not the only effective one on that team.

What's up with this coach speech BS. Why can't someone say something positive about an opponent and truly mean it? I understand not wanting to say something negative about someone but you typically don't rattle off all these things if he's an average guy. Think he would spend this long talking about someone like Josh McCown or another similar QB?

    • thats fair.   I was beginning to think rookie punter was in the plans
    • Sam Martin   CARPunter#6 Panthers re-signed P Sam Martin to a two-year contract. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Martin’s deal is up to $5 million. Martin joined the Panthers last season on a one-year deal and wound up booting 56 punts for an average of 47.2 yards per punt. Martin is a 13-year vet of the league who has spent time with four different franchises. He landed a career-best 48.2 percent of his kicks inside his opponent’s 20-yard line last season.
    • Surprised CB is that low.  19th is odd spot. For many recent drafts, teams only felt there were around 14 first round players.  So to many 19 is just an early second and doesn't hold the value of a first.  If you go off- the smart path of LT, QB, edge, WR, CB, etc. Whatever your OG, Safety, ILB, etc needs to be a difference maker, that's the key point. I've said the 8th best edge is better than the 1st safety. Same for QB and even WRs. You should 100% factor in position value.  MHS you've been wanting a FS, let me tell you its super difficult to be a difference making FS. You're just sooo farrrr away from the action and the end result most times. If you're in the play, defense made mistakes in order. Now to talk out of both sides, maaaaaann that white boy from Oregon....I thought he crushed the combine and honestly that alone made me rethink "is he worth 19 now?!?!" he's now in the discussion for me, but still below others.    Plus I feel TE is vastly underrated in value terms. But looking at the last 20 years of TEs in the first, its down right bad. You're better like X10 better drafting one in 4th or 5th.
