Normally you can't blame a loss like this on one person, but in this case...

the Torrey Smith was on Cason, he got away with a small push but I was okay with it not being called.  The other 2 were rushing td's and even the first one was flukey, with the tipped ball and all but he still lost 89.  then Smith beat him like he has beaten many better CB's straight off the line.

in no possible way or fashion is this loss put on a CB that gave up 2 td's, not even close.  White didnt play his best but this is so far off base I dont even know why I am acknowledging it.

I went back and checked and you are correct, it was Cason who gave up the Torrey Smith TD, my bad.

So White only totally failed in his basic coverage responsibilities on 2 scoring plays, not 3.

No excuse for losing Smith in coverage on the first TD and no excuse for not getting his head turned and playing the ball on the 2nd TD, when he was in good position to do so. Rivera felt the same way and yanked him out of the game.

I guess you can say he got beat on the 1st one, but I dont know if that was even for Steve. He got beat the other time. Torrey was Cason

There's no way you can say he got beat on the first TD. Once he saw it was tipped he adjusted his coverage to go for the ball and get the pick, we just couldn't catch a break on where the ball went off the tip.

Worth remembering that Smith would have practiced against White a lot last year. He'd know a lot about his habits, tendencies, strengths and weaknesses.

You can say White would know him too, but in that situation I have to give the veteran the advantage.

If we were talking about anything other than blowing basic coverage techniques/responsibilities I would agree with this.

Maybe Smitty got in his head, maybe he was in his head before the game started?

If the pass rush not doing well and giving us the opportunity to evaluate our corners we will soon realize every single one of our corners are horrible. Their deficiencies have been masked by the elite pass rush. There's a reason we aren't paying them poo for money, because they aren't good.

We shouldn't have to rely on an elite pass rush for our CB's to handle basic coverage assignments and use good technique.

No Steve was leading him. Flacco threw it in the area, if it was just steve there he would have caught it untouched

Harper and Decoud having been much better.

Harper absolutely sucks and is always a mismatch when on the field. I knew he sucked covering anything with legs. But at least he could help run defense right??? Wrong!!!

I thought he might be a solid in the box safety at least but he sucks at that now.

Seems like Harper freelances a lot, instead of playing his assignment.

DeCoud make a really nice play on the ball from the other side of the field for a near interception, and he tipped the pass in the Detroit game that led to White's interception, so there's that.

If it wasn't tipped by Daniels it would've been high and out of bounds.

How steve was on the left near the sideline, the TE was coming towards him on an out. He tipped by a lil bit with his right hand and it fell right into steve hands. Its because steve was there for the play cause he left White. If anything the ball would have hit the ground, incomplete pass. Definitely wasn't on its way out of bounds

    • You're correct (on its face). But PFF does indeed use advanced stats to come up with their grades. Not trying to turn this into a debate about PFF (at all because it's been done ad nauseum), but here is how PFF explains it:   GRADES VS. STATS We aren’t grading players based on the yardage they rack up or the stats they collect. Statistics can be indicative of performance but don’t tell the whole story and can often lie badly. Quarterbacks can throw the ball straight to defenders but if the ball is dropped, you won't see it on the stat sheet. Conversely, they can dump the ball off on a sequence of screen passes and end up with a gaudy looking stat line if those skill position players do enough work after the catch. PFF grades the play, not its result, so the quarterback that throws the ball to defenders will be downgraded whether the defender catches the ball to notch the interception on the stat sheet or not. No amount of broken tackles and yards after the catch from a bubble screen will earn a quarterback a better grade, even though his passing stats may be getting padded. The same is true for most positions. Statistics can be misleading. A tackle whose quarterback gets the ball out of his hands quicker than anybody else may not give up many sacks, but he can still be beaten often and earn a poor grade. Receivers that are targeted relentlessly could post big-time numbers but may offer little more than the product of a volume-based aerial attack. https://www.pff.com/grades So PFF uses stats to come up with player grades and rankings.
