Gil Brandt draft redo

banging on gman now is short sighted. this is only his second season, and we have been cash strapped due to bad contracts still on the books. he's proven that he can pick quality talent. he'll build a solid roster through drafting and good contracts. 3 years few now, everyone will be praising the roster for having better backups than most teams have starters.

And he also has tied his own hands behind his back by franchising Hardy. THIRTEEN MILLION DOLLARS.

imagine the level of uproar on this board if DG had let Hardy walk?

a long term deal wasn't made, so it was franchise him, or let him go.  It was the right decision.  Can't blame DG for Hardy making moronic decisions in the offseason.

A lot of the same people who are upset about us tagging Hardy are the same ones upset with us letting Smith go.

Keeping Hardy cost us 13 million.

Keeping Smith would have cost us 20 million.

Hardy was arguably the most important part of our defense last year.  A defense that carried this team.

Has the loss of Hardy hurt our defense more then the loss of Smith has hurt our passing attack?

Also people get caught up with the 13m number.  People seem to forget that it is a one year deal.  Any top tier tackle would have commanded a much larger number over multiple years.

Maybe we tagged Hardy hoping to trade him later, or to sign him to a long term deal.

Can't lie.

I've thought about these things myself. Particularly the latter, as we've all just noticed Mr. Gettleman's "ahem" faulty looking assets and shape. :startle:

Nonetheless, let's hope much more good health and prosperity for both.

There is another factor to consider when looking at our SB odds: Cam. If he leaves, we will be doomed to mediocrity, I'm afraid.

so, one guy.  one undrafted player is the reason DG sucks as a GM.  let's not pretend that Hurst is the next coming of Orlando Pace.  He's starting because the guy in front of him went down, not because he earned it through stellar play.  Yes he's doing fine, but he got a lot of help last weekend.  Hurst would have been nice to add to the team, and probably has a good future in front of him, but he would not have made our Oline a solid ass kicking machine this year.

OL changes are certainly coming, be it through FA or the draft, when the right player is there.  Overpaying for mediocre talent is not going to happen.  We'll get our Oline, and it will be quality talent for a proper contract.

did i say he sucked as a GM? i said i liked him and most of what he's done. saying that he's not perfect isn't saying he sucked? i mean by your standards it might, but not by most people.

and hurst doesn't need to be the next orlando pace or whatever. he just would have needed to be better than the two clowns we currently have, which isn't that high a bar to reach. there were others available and still are who could have helped us out or at least provided competition for the two starting jobs or AT LEAST brought in some well needed depth. we did nothing and it showed.

and people have been saying for the past couple months that changes are certainly coming on the OL. people defending every little thing that gettleman does was saying either they are good enough or that there's no way that we would go into the season with those two because gettleman has something up his sleeve or whatever. well guess what? we are about a quarter of the way through the season and we still have these two clowns starting with no other prospects and they still suck. the only reasonable conclusion is that we are going to stay with the guys who are here, whether or not they can actually keep cam alive or not because rivera and/or gettleman believe in them.

neither gettleman or rivera are perfect in their ability to discern talent. i fully believe that their trust in those two guys was misplaced and the proof is in the sucking. am i saying i can do a better job than gettleman? nope, but i can sure spot a turd when i see one and i see two turds. one is on the left side of the OL and the other is on the right.

also, is overpaying for mediocre talent better than paying very little for very little talent? in this case we are getting what we pay for. the only problem is we didn't factor into the equation the cost of getting cam hurt, bad pass protection, and piss poor run blocking on the season. the price we are paying is what we see on the field.

I've never in my life seen a coach, GM or other official that didn't make some mistakes.

Ozzie Newsome spent a first round draft pick on Sergio Kindle.

Bobby Beathard traded picks and a player for the chance to draft Ryan Leaf.

Nobody's perfect (except on Madden).

We tagged hardy before his legal troubles and before post ray rice NFL. If that video never leaked hardy would have been playing the whole season. Don't blame dg for that. It was the right move at the time.

Everyone loves to look back and say they were calling for one thing when that move only looks good now because of poo that happened which no one could foresee happening

the domestic abuse thing has very little/nothing to do with my feelings on whether or not hardy should have been tagged.

i don't think it was the right call because that was way too much money being spent on one position and i felt from the beginning that it would come back to bite us in the ass more than letting him go would. hardy and johnson take up 21% of the total cap and 50% of cap used on the defense.

adding to that, he has an overly risky lifeztyle that he refuses to get under control that the organization has to be getting tired of and it was only a matter of time before it bit him in the ass. i mean the guy has a right to live how he wants, but the panthers don't have to be pying for it. there's several things that he had done which would have resulted in a firing from many corporations, but we were going to give him $15mil for another year of it. granted the chances of us signing him to a long term deal were virtually nil i think largely because of those two reasons, but i stillthink the hard but better decision would have been to let him walk and improve at least the OL.

If the rice video never leaks he plays and gets paid the 13 he earned as a top pro bowl de.

Only looks worse than it actually was because he has to sit of some trumped up media bs.
