Star and KK getting reps at DE

Sounds like they are going to a 46 or 52 defense.

This is the perfect move. The best athletes on defense are the LBs. You cannot have offensive linemen teeing off on them. So you go 5 down linemen and 2 LBs.

Then you can audible to a 46 by bringing up Harper to the line and having your two DEs go over the TE.

This type of defense requires more stunting by the defensive linemen in a 52 which will keep teams from aiming at Star and Luke, which is what they have been doing the past 2 weeks. This also forces the offensive linemen to stay on the first level. Without threats at DE who need to be doubled or force max pro in a 4-3 you may as well go 52 because one of your LBs is just taking up space on an OL 5 yards deep.

Dwan and Cole rotate in at Nose. CJ, Star and KK play over the guards. Horton, Ealy and Addison play over the tackles. Luke and TD roam free and shoot the gaps with their reads. Bring Harper down in the box on the weak side when the offense has heavy personnel. Sub Klein or Blackburn in on 46 sets against the run and take Harper out.

When the offense goes spread on a 52, which is what usually happens to defeat a 52, the Panthers have 2 LBs who can cover. As long as it is Davis and Kuechly, I am not the least bit worried about a spread against a 52. If it is  an empty backfield set you now have 1 on 1 matchups with the OL. Empty sets/passing downs you go with Star at Nose, and CJ and Star play 3 techniques over the guards. This should be able to destroy the pocket up the middle one on one and push the QB into the DEs. The OTs are taken away from  Star, CJ, and KK and they only contend with 3 OLs up the middle. This will force the offense to keep at least one back in to block with the penetration that trio will get up the middle. And now Kuechly is free to roam again.

WIthout the rotation of Hardy, CJ, and Alexander at DE, the 4-3 is shot.

I have been wanting them to go to a 52 against the Steelers when we knew CJ was struggling at DE outside the OT and Hardy was gone with Alexander in limbo. This is the perfect fit with the Panthers current defensive personnel and they will get immediate pressure up the middle against the run and pass. Offensive guards will struggle with CJ  if you use him at DT in a 52.

God I hope you're right.

    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
    • Ok LT and Petersen are a cut above everyone else to me cmc and Faulk are interchangeable on this list.  though Faulk was better career wise
