How many draft picks is Cam worth?

Firstly, Cam can be the best QB in the league.  Give him a competent line, he would take over the NFL.  However our cap situation is not improving as fast as I would like.  In the next year or so, we will most likely give Cam the highest contract for a QB to date.  In the next 2 years, we will probably give Kuechly the highest contract of a defender to date.  So that would be two guys taking up a heck of a lot of cap space.  Most likely once we sign them long term, we would have no choice but to sign scrubs to play with them. (Think about Tom Brady and his current offense)

Let's just entertain the thought for a second.  Cam is our biggest asset, and I'm sure a lot of QB needy teams would give up a good bit to get him.  Gettleman has shown he can hit his marks in the early rounds of the draft.  We could supply this team with good talent, and DA has shown he can get the job done.  So, how many picks is Cam worth?  I would say a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, next year's 1st.

You should've just put this in the main form.

But you build a team around Cam not Kuechly. Elite QB's don't grow on trees. I'll lose it if DG gives Kuechly a record setting contract.

Kuechly could have a breakout season that could give him the title of best all around defensive player in the league.  If we get our D-line playing right, which probably won't be this year, Kuechly could do some amazing things deserving of a record contract.

Off season already?

It's getting there.

This is not the NBA where you can sell off your assets for draft picks and then recover in a few seasons. The NFL has a much thinner talent pool to draw from and requires five times the roster size for each team meaning the impact of a typical draft is five times less to the make up of the entire roster.

All that is to say if you sell Cam off for a ton of draft picks, there's no guarantee this franchise will ever see a QB of his caliber ever again. Franchises have been mired in futility for literally decades trying to find a franchise quarterback. To even entertain his value in a trade is absolutely ridiculous especially at this juncture of his career.

In terms of value, look no further than the Rams-Skins RG3 blockbuster to see that a ton of draft picks to shore up the roster doesn't guarantee success if you don't have a quarterback that can win you football games. We could build a Seahawks-esque roster with no weaknesses but it means nothing if we're relying on Derek Anderson to get us into the playoffs. The Rams are learning that the hard way.

With the Rams, they put all their eggs in an oft-injured Sam Bradford basket.  They never really thought about replacing him or drafting a QB to replace him.  I imagine that is going to change this upcoming draft.  Besides Anderson can be just as good and probably better than what Delhomme was for us.  Delhomme lead us to a superbowl, two NFC championship games, and a divisional playoff appearence in his six year career here.  He was able to do that with the multitude of talent around him.

The problem here is we are going to put a ton of money in Cam's pocket, making him a very big investment.  There's some concerns about his health for the future, and who knows if management will ever provide the kind of support and gameplan that will make Cam the best.  I mean we still have a run oriented offense, with our defense being the main attraction.  With Rivera being a defensive minded guy, who's to say we will ever get that OC that will make this team pass oriented.  The ultimate truth is, Cam probably won't become anything here in Carolina as long as we have Rivera as coach.  Not to say Rivera is a bad coach.  I really love the expertise he brings to our defense and team overall.  However, Cam is just not his kind of QB.  I don't want to throw all that money in Cam's direction, when we don't utilize the passing attack. (We got guys like Swole bones and Bersin, and we don't even use them.  If the passing attack was more utilized, we would be using more receiver sets and two tight end sets in the passing game)

Of course Cam will get his money and be built around. You think Dave enjoys watching this offensive line? If I have to say it once I have to say it a thousand times on this board: he is working with what he is given, and that was an absolutely terrible situation made worse by the fact that everything clicked in a rebuilding year. He knows what it takes to win, he just doesn't have the space to build his team. J.R. threw money around like nobody's business during the Hurney years. There is literally no reason for him to not pay his quarterback.

Cam is injured for the first time in his career. He didn't turn into Matt Schaub overnight. The team had two bad weeks. It happens.

He did franchise Greg Hardy, throwing away 13 million dollars of cap space.  Now, even if Hardy didn't get into the trouble he's gotten into, chances are we weren't going to bring Hardy back long term.  So why did he franchise him for another year?  That was money we could have used to bring back Mitchell, could have signed Veldheer at LT, and who knows what else.  Of course Rivera had more time than Gettleman, and he refused in all that time to invest in bringing in competent O-linemen.  He brought in dudes like Silatolu over Cordy Glenn, and brought in draft bust Kugz.  These are guys nobody heard of prior to the draft.  By now, Silatolu has shown he is going to be nothing but an average guy at best.  Ultimately with that track record, who's to say things will improve?  So far in Cam's career, we have brought in two run oriented OCs.  Actually the guy we have now was already on the staff.  I doubt Rivera is going to bring in a dynamic OC with a system he has never seen before to replace Shula.  I have a feeling the running game will always be the point of emphasis under Rivera.  I just don't know if we are going to get our money's worth out of Newton.  I would rather that money going elsewhere, into parts of our team that we are going to use correctly.

    • I can only imagine the **** eating grins on the committee right now. "Oh, Bama didn't deserve it? Oh, Miami didn't deserve it? Suck it, haters!" lol
    • To say that, is gaslighting, because it isn’t true. I mean, maybe one or two people do that but it isn’t the predominant behavior. Even Frank has given him credit. I think particularly the Rams game. A couple of glowing posts.   I know I have. Gotta be honest about it because if you aren’t it undermines what else you say.  But the degree of how far I go with credit, in terms of it being a projection of future performance? Not very far. Acknowledge it, but require more of it. There is a lot of bad play to offset.    I tried to remain passive while the last 9 games (post ankle injury) played out. It is just really hard when the lows won’t go away. I failed. As high as a couple of those highs were, there isn’t enough.    I know it is premature to just say I want to move on, made my decision after 6 of those games ended up pretty much really good or not good enough, but I have had enough of being patient and letting him show the reality either way.  So in my view, he Could still validate himself to a decent degree if he smokes the last three starts. But also in my view I don’t expect to see it. Maybe one more high quality start, would be my expectation. So yes he could still somehow justify having the job next year. If that happened I still wouldn’t have much faith given the last three years and all that has transpired. Again, there is a lot of bad play to offset.
    • To start with, you wouldn’t want to count up that value chart. You would see quickly where that is headed. But you basically did a quantity comparison, while ignoring quality.  I am looking at 2023 as the start, because it became all about Bryce.  2023 you have 4 picks plus DJ Moore for offense vs 2 (80 and 145) for defense.  2024 you got the 1st overall, the 32, the 46 and the 101 for offense vs 72, 157, 200 and 240 for defense. Leave the FA IOL out of it. Which was a crazy big  investment. But it wasn’t draft.  Anyway, that is basically 4 top 100 picks for offense and 4 picks for defense in 2024. Except they were 2 first rounders, the second rounder, and the 4th was really high at 101. Vs 72 and day three stuff. Please….  Second quoted/bolded… See you think we hate Bryce. That isn’t it at all. It is nice easy way to characterize us and discredit our talking points though.   Me, I do mostly hate watching him play. But I don’t hate the person. I hate the hell out of the stanning.  It started with the very first question I asked about his footwork, arm strength, and size. Height being the principle objection. I never even got to the durability factor. There was plenty without factoring that in.  But there was rabid opposition to even asking the question of what a couple of small fractions of a second extra closing time would do for the defenders.  What the extra time it takes to flip the hips would do vs a pass rush or on the other end after the ball is in the air. Split second more for recognition where it is going for the DBs.  The tippy toe backpedal.  That poo was a mess and it has always been mess but no Bryce fan wanted to hear it. “Go get another team to root for”. “It worked in the SEC it will be fine in the NFL you don’t know football you are just a hater”.  It got worse when the real games started. It has never stopped. It is nice that many people have left that train so there is less abuse but it hasn’t stopped.  So whatever…
