Shula, take note

Your argument has devolved. The minute you say "well you couldn't do any better" you loose your argument. We arnt being paid to call plays but we can have an opinion on who does. There are a lot of coaches and coordinators who suck and are still collecting a big paycheck. You can't use that as a argument.

Watch me...

When people devolve to calling someone who is clearly their superior in a field "stupid", Im going to be there to point out how they are so obviously uninformed and undereducated.

Why do people act like Benjamin was the only one running a pattern? Cam chose to throw to him and made a horrible throw on top of that. I don't understand why people focus so hard on just the person Cam throws to and pretend that he only had that one option. I promise that having one person run a deep route on 3rd and short is common place, just most quarterbacks don't target them unless it's a favorable matchup.

I never claimed my opinion is "on point", nor do I have to have any CV to justify my opinion. I just like to believe that I know football enough to recognize when bad playcalling and bad play design are occurring. I think it's fairly obvious.

If you'd like to offer a counter-point, then go ahead, I'll listen. As it stands, the only defense of Shula is people like you saying "it's not Shula's fault". The things we do well, he calls a few times a game. Things we don't, he calls repetitively throughout the game. Screens work for us, read option works for us, yet we ran both VERY few times as compared to the slow-developing routes 25 yards down field.

It's a fact that his situational play-calling is crap, it's a fact that his inability to call a consistent offense is a hindrance. Just by simply viewing it, you can see it. We go up-tempo in the 2nd half early, we score. We slow down, and sputter again.

TL;DR, offer a counter-argument or STFU, because everything I've said is observable fact.

My counter-argument is simply this...

As fans we think we know as much or more about this game than people who have demonstrated a superior knowledge.  When you count all of the high school coaches, and all of the college coaches, and all of the assistant and position coaches, then you have to acknowledge that to get to the point of being an OC or DC in the NFL puts you amongst the top 1% of all of the football coaches in the world.

For us bunch of dilettantes to call a man stupid is in fact stupid.

Was he out coached?

Maybe but stupid he is not...

Because you can still see the other receivers come off the line and either run well past the first down marker, or make a cut that takes them way past the first down marker. That and I've been to games and witnessed first hand that Shula loves going vertical or running post/flag routes on short down and distance.

Anybody that makes the argument that coordinators and GMs are automatically smarter than we are needs to remember Matt Millen was a GM of an actual NFL team and Dan Henning used to be the offensive coordinator here for 6 years.

So then you are part of the top echelon of a coaching team at the highest level in the land?

Cause I can imagine choosing a 70-150k sales/office/management job over being a 150k a year OC in the NFL

I'll concede that point; however, if we're going to say that Shula was just out coached, then he gets out coached a lot, which isn't exactly good. Maybe he just can't recognize defensive schemes quickly, because during the no-huddle drives we ran, the defense was on it's heels. Give the DC less time to diagnose your personnel and what you might run and how to stop it, and that gives you an advantage. Why is this not being utilized if you're struggling with playcalling? These are recurring themes for Shula, regardless of the reason, whether it be incompetence or just being out coached.

15-6 and never missed the postseason with him

But let's fire him tonight

And how many of those games did we have to win in spite of shoddy playcalling? The past couple weeks, sure, I'll go with the OL and defense being too bad to win regardless of playcalling. Today, we looked OK (outside of a the OL a few times). Good enough to win handily, especially after seeing the drive before halftime and that scoring drive early in the 2nd half when we went up-tempo. But we didn't, we had to win late with our defense coming through big time in the 4th quarter, twice.

We can't keep leaning on the defense alone. The 49ers in the playoffs showed us that last season.

You've succeeded in only making yourself look foolish. Name calling is even a lower form of a argument. If every Coordinator and coach in the NFL are so much more superior you clearly don't understand that you can be a bad NFL coordinator but good at other things that got you to the job. I don't think Shula is stupid I think he is a bad OC in the NFL.

See...

Now I can get next to that.

Although Ill propose that he didn't get out coached that much last year.  Do you think he just tossed out the knowledge he had last year or do you think that maybe the complex picture that is the offensive performance of an NFL franchise can't be boiled down to one player or coach?

Maybe we have a shitty OLine

Maybe we are one dimentional

Maybe out best RB is less than NFL starting material

Maybe or OC is a little below NFL par

Maybe its all of that
