B/R NFL Power Rankings by Matt Miller

Not bad......

Last Week: 18

This Week: 14

Change: +4

The Carolina Panthers have been as up-and-down as any team in the NFL during the early part of the season. And now, with a win over the Chicago Bears, they climb back up the rankings.

Cam Newton may not be a popular MVP candidate, and who knows if the numbers will be there for him at season's end, but few players are as crucial to their team's success as he is. With a ragtag offensive line, a depleted running-back corps and receivers named Brenton Bersin and Philly Brown, the Panthers are winning. And that's a huge testament to Newton's maturation and development as a quarterback.

The schedule won't be easy for the reigning NFC South champions, but the way this division looks today, there is no team playing better through five weeks.

Looks like the sports writers got their buzz word "maturation" in smh. You won't hear that word used in a luck or Wilson article I guarantee you that

Playing devils advocate...

Neither of those guys had the same maturity issues as Cam, who had majorly red flags. They were valid concerns, although he has matured greatly since the UF drama & at this point it's a stupid thing to talk about. He's a man now.

The article is pretty fair placement.  I hope we can pull one off in Cincy.  This was a game I thought we wouldn't win so here is our chance.  This is the 49er game from last year.  Going into a big dogs backyard and taking him on for a win.  New England ripped them an new one so the fight is going to be nasty.  We bring the defense from the first two games and the second half of yesterday.  We'll be in it to the end.

The maturation issue has been media driven all along.  Listen to him talk about KB in the press conference.  He was saying how KB hadn't lost and winning was a given.  Being undefeated and winning the national championship spoiled him.  He needs to learn how to handle losing and having a bad day.  Sound familiar?  Cam hadn't lost a game in TWO full season before coming to Carolina.  Learning to lose is not easy and especially for a winner like Cam. Doesn't mean he wasn't mature just didn't know how to handle losing.

Cam will be an MVP candidate but no way he wins it. Won't have the numbers.

Eh, he doesn't really put up the sexy numbers everyone wants from MVPs. He's a very good clutch QB who can move the ball downfield with his arm and do even more when he has his legs, but he's not that 4,000 yard, 40+ TD QB everyone wants to see on on an MVPs stat line. At least, not with Shula.

When the sports writers first started the Luck love, they kept saying he was a architectural student. Uhhh, no. He was an architectural ART STUDENT. Still pisses me off.

He has a degree in Architectural Design.....which is a degree is architecture and is NOT an Art degree and he was NOT an Art student.

    • Basically agree.  He is the one of that bunch that offers upgraded pass catching along with he is supposed to be kind of special.   Then you have the OL and the ideas that if they perform you can have JAG backs and still do well. So okay we could be fine.  But Brooks is important and to me that receiving element sets him apart.  So there sure is something riding on him.     What strikes me as incongruent is people over in Atlanta or those that follow them look at Penix with a third surgery and act like it is no big deal.      And we are on pins and needles over Brooks.  Either they should worry a lot more or we should worry a lot less.
    • I usually go a game or two optimist over the consensus here but this is too early for me to say. I need to see some players on the field.  I am not feeling real optimistic though.
    • Okay as a ‘take CJ’ fan I actually don’t obsess over CJ and Houston, contrary to the narrative.  But I thought I picked up some noise that his OL left a lot to be desired.    Not a single Beyce supporter would judge him harshly if he had a crappy OL. We all know that.    So be fair about it.  A QB needs to be protected.  Especially a guy that gets to his spot and wants to finish the play from there. Which CJ is.
