CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

The Panthers will play the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend, but the outcome of the game could determine which city gets to officially call itself the real “Queen City.”

The City of Charlotte has announced the Queen City Bowl -- a friendly social media challenge issued to the City of Cincinnati to determine the real “Queen City.”

With both the North Carolina and Ohio cities staking claim to the nickname, the real Queen City will be determined by the outcome of the Panthers/Bengals game in Cincinnati on Sunday.

VOTE NOW: WHO WINS THE GAME?

“The Panthers-Bengals game is always a spirited occasion, but this year’s ‘Queen City Bowl’ challenge is adding even more excitement to Sunday’s match-up,” said Mayor Dan Clodfelter. “We look forward to a Panthers victory and our rightful claim to the Queen City title.”

Leading up to the Queen City Bowl, each city will share facts about its history and community, engage residents through social media and show support for their respective hometown teams to build fan participation.

Both cities have agreed that the loser of the Queen City Bowl must issue the winner a symbolic item relevant to its city. Items will be announced following Sunday’s game. In addition to social media participation, the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority will create a website where fans can vote on who they believe to be the real Queen City.

The City of Charlotte’s history behind the Queen City nickname refers to Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who was the wife of King George III of Great Britain. Cincinnati’s claim to the name refers to its population growth in the late eighteenth century which led to residents coining the term “The Queen of the West.”

A quick glance on Wiki showed me that at least 32 cities use the nickname, lol.

Wiki-

Queen City is a term which is often used to describe a city which is the largest city in a country, state, province, or territory, but which is not the capital.

To be honest, Charlotte, hell Mecklenburg Co, & the whole Queen City name is rather retarded when you read the actual history behind it.

We are Buzz City.  They can have that stoopid moniker if they want it.  After Sunday, we will be called Buzz City AND We Beat That Ginger's Ass City.

Only thing good that came out of Cincy was the "75, "76 Reds, WKRP and Luke August Kuechly.  None of those are there anymore.

I wasn't doubting you, if that's why you quoted me. Just mentioning what I read.

    • Bryce has been in the NFL 3 years and still looks like a very mediocre QB. Most games are nothing but mediocre plays with a highlight reel every now and then.  He is a very INCONSISTENT QB and it’s very fustrating. He does not deserve a 5th year option, even though the Panthers and all the dumb asses in the front office will give it to him.
    • I’ve rarely ever been more sure of anything than losing out — but how can anyone say with a straight face “Bryce hasn’t improved, but Canales has and he’s masks his flaws”. You have to be so out of touch with reality to put one way above the other when discussing those two.
    • Last night was the classic example of a visiting team just holding on through the wave of emotion a home team has at the start of a big time game. Bama’s first two kickoff returns really set them back as far as playcalling and allowed OU to dictate field position. The emotion of the home crowd fed into what OU was doing at that point, and it felt like Bama would not be able to overcome that.     Once the kickoff returner was told to fair catch every kick, the game shifted, as Bama wasn’t starting each drive inside their own 15. It was then that Bama was able to make some plays, outscoring OU 34-7 the rest of the way.  I think the last 3/4 of the game proves Bama was the better team. OU was just able to ride the initial wave of emotion to a big lead, but Bama held on just enough.  However, had OU blocked the punt on Bama’s second drive and scored a TD (vice a FG on the ensuing drive), things likely would have been different.  Anyway, Roll Tide!
