I downloaded pimsleur yesterday... it's pretty good so far. I'm using it on commutes to school and then Rosetta Stone for everything else, plus flash cards at work.

Are you fluent? What were you doing over there?

not in the least fluent. in fact, picked up very little. I really struggle with the tonal Asian languages. was just there as a tourist. stop #1 on a RTW.

Pimsleur is perfect for commutes. my spanish went from nada to respectable pretty quickly in less than a month's time.

nice. i've been to hanoi and saigon on separate occasions, but didn't spend much more than a couple of days in either. i picked up thai pretty well, but i also had a lot longer to study it. tonal languages can be overwhelming at first.

luckily my emphasis will be on learning to read it fluently… which aligns with how i best learn.

I think you've been everywhere I've been 100x over.

But, if you don't carry this hobby already, join geocaching.comand read up on it. It takes you to really fun spots over the world and allows you to share it all online.

I have one to my name in Colorado Springs that is a helluva find.

I geocached for a while. Was a lot of fun.

it's officially vietnam. i've gotten departmental approval to pursue it, i'll be there over the summer in 2015, and until then i'll be completely immersing myself in the language as much as is possible without actually being there. downloaded rosetta stone today, spending work drawing up flashcards, drowning myself in histories and ethnographies of post-war vietnamese society.

should be a great distraction from shitty panthers football.

Found this thread too late, I was gonna suggest Hong Kong.  Interesting stuff going on there now, with the protests and everything.  Right up the alley of what you were looking for.  And it's an amazing city too, you'd have a lot of fun.  Vietnam is cool too though, can go to jungles and stuff.  Food is great.  If you're able, there's lots to see in neighboring countries too.  Angkor Wat, the cesspool that is Thailand, Malaysia is cool but a bit further.

Have you been there?  I mean it can be a fun cesspool, but it's pretty crazy.  Thailand and the Philippines are two places I'm glad I've been to but I won't go back, especially now that I have kids.  Thai food is in my top 3 favorite foods though, so they have that going for them.

yeah bangkok can be a bit much, especially if you're in bang rak or patpong. up north is where it's at. to date chiang mai is one of my favorite cities on the planet.
