It looks bleak at the moment, but for some good news, Rivera teams close out the season well! There is hope and there is even more hope on the horizon.

For all the Gettleman bashers, I'm not quite on your train yet and I don't think I will be for at least two years. Here is why:

-with the exception of Hardy and Bell, we aren't scheduled to lose any heavy hitters

-our salary cap really begins to open up

On the salary cap:

-we currently hold contracts that total 130mil for 2015

Ok, let's assume that the cap set by the NFL increases from the current 133mil to 135mil. We also have 7mil rollover.

135 mil + 7mil=142mil Cap

142mil-130mil=12mil Cap Space

That's not all. No Way Godfrey stays! In 2015, he has a cap hit of 7mil and his dead money hit is 3 mil if cut. Let's assume we cut him pre-June 1st. We can then add an additional 4mil to our cap space for the year. Also, DeCoud has a 2.2ish mil cap hit/.25mil dead money hit. IMO, gone!

We are now looking at 18mil in cap space.

That's still not all! We can except that CJ will be here awhile longer. There is roughly 9 mil to gain in reworking his contract. Let's assume we get 5mil of it, which we can do and still be clear to cut ties with him in 2016 and gain monster cap space.

If we get 5mil off his base salary converted to bonus, then we are now:

23mil in cap space.

What about Cam's contract? He is on the books already for 14mil. That 130mil 2015 commitment includes the start of Cam making huge bucks. Signing to a properly balanced deal can actually reduce that 14mil number in 2016, but only moderately.

We can also cut D-Will as a June 1st cut. That would add another 6mil to our cap space for 2015, but count as 6mil worth of dead money on the 2016 books(basically replaces the dead money of Smitty/Godfrey).

The Good:

Potentially 29mil in cap space with Cam's "blockbuster deal" numbers already starting. If done right, that's enough to keep Hardy and sign JPP. It's also enough to sign some quality OL and DBs.

A good draft(Gordon/Coleman and 3 more starter quality guys) and we get very well rounded.

The Bad:

We stuck with Stewart at least till 2016

the Panthers will spend all their cap on defense and 2 of the first 3 picks will be defense, the Huddle will cheer in April, and then complain about not hanging with Rodgers and Brees in September, while the offensive talent erodes away for a 5th straight year.

I'm all for Defensive FA and take BOPA each round. Tevin Coleman and Kevin White out of this draft! Would also like to see a TE to replace Dickson that actually makes our 2 TE sets scary

Problem is, cap room doesn't fix all our problems. Won't even fix half of them.

This is what a lot of posters here don't seem to grasp. Sure, we can say "HURNEY fugED US!" or "NO CAP SPACE~!!!~!" until we're blue in the face, but it doesn't take away from the fact that we're not a very good football team. We have almost no offensive line, our entire secondary sucks, and players are aging by the minute. Meanwhile, this coaching staff jerks each other off while praying to anyone that will listen that Cam has an amazing game and bails everyone out.

The troubles with this team run far, far deeper than just restructuring some contracts.

    • If Reich or Fitterer were still around I think the need to extend Young because of what he cost would be stronger.  And yeah Morgan was Fit's right hand when the call was made but there an equal chance that Dan will see it as a chance to move on from Fit and shake off that stink. Holding out some hope that 3 years and clear eyes will allow for an honest appraisal that Young just aint the guy
    • As far as elite/elevate talent QB’s It’s Allen Mahomes Jackson and Burrow that’s it.  Then we have tiers and those can be debated all day Dak is a good QB but I know this board would want him out of Charlotte if he was the QB here. 2 playoff wins in 10 years. Justin Herbert no playoff wins. Threw 4 interceptions in last years playoff game. 23 TD passes last year. 20 the year below and 25 the year before that. This board loves stats without context and these stats aren’t saying they’re much above complimentary  Kyler Murray isn’t good. I’m not sure how he made this list.  Caleb Williams, Trevor Lawrence both benefiting from some real good offensive coaches right now. They’re both complimentary pieces until proven otherwise  I like Jordan Love. Always have. I wanted to draft him but he isn’t a superstar.  CJ Stroud hasn’t been much better than Bryce after his rookie season. After that Bears game year 2 his numbers very similar to Bryce I will say I think Drake Maye is well on his way to becoming the next top tier QB if I had to pick one from this entire list. I’d also say Baker Mayfield is a damn good QB and I’d take him over most of those guys not in the elite category  Now if you want to debate tools and which QB’s possess tools to put them in higher tiers that’s a completely different discussion. Most QB’s on your main list all have those physical tools that will keep you thinking he’ll become the next top tier QB. They’ll sprinkle in a “wow” play or two a game. Bryce will never look that way. Young’s game at its peak will physically always look different and I think that’s where most people struggle when it comes to seeing how Young’s can be successful in the league  All QB’s need a team around them. I think the Bills are failing Josh Allen much like the Panthers did Cam. Beane and McDermott using same blueprint with Bills team. Josh Allen hasn’t had much in terms of WR’s and it’s ultimately costing them when it matters the most
