It looks bleak at the moment, but for some good news, Rivera teams close out the season well! There is hope and there is even more hope on the horizon.

For all the Gettleman bashers, I'm not quite on your train yet and I don't think I will be for at least two years. Here is why:

-with the exception of Hardy and Bell, we aren't scheduled to lose any heavy hitters

-our salary cap really begins to open up

On the salary cap:

-we currently hold contracts that total 130mil for 2015

Ok, let's assume that the cap set by the NFL increases from the current 133mil to 135mil. We also have 7mil rollover.

135 mil + 7mil=142mil Cap

142mil-130mil=12mil Cap Space

That's not all. No Way Godfrey stays! In 2015, he has a cap hit of 7mil and his dead money hit is 3 mil if cut. Let's assume we cut him pre-June 1st. We can then add an additional 4mil to our cap space for the year. Also, DeCoud has a 2.2ish mil cap hit/.25mil dead money hit. IMO, gone!

We are now looking at 18mil in cap space.

That's still not all! We can except that CJ will be here awhile longer. There is roughly 9 mil to gain in reworking his contract. Let's assume we get 5mil of it, which we can do and still be clear to cut ties with him in 2016 and gain monster cap space.

If we get 5mil off his base salary converted to bonus, then we are now:

23mil in cap space.

What about Cam's contract? He is on the books already for 14mil. That 130mil 2015 commitment includes the start of Cam making huge bucks. Signing to a properly balanced deal can actually reduce that 14mil number in 2016, but only moderately.

We can also cut D-Will as a June 1st cut. That would add another 6mil to our cap space for 2015, but count as 6mil worth of dead money on the 2016 books(basically replaces the dead money of Smitty/Godfrey).

The Good:

Potentially 29mil in cap space with Cam's "blockbuster deal" numbers already starting. If done right, that's enough to keep Hardy and sign JPP. It's also enough to sign some quality OL and DBs.

A good draft(Gordon/Coleman and 3 more starter quality guys) and we get very well rounded.

The Bad:

We stuck with Stewart at least till 2016

The salary cap in 2015 is expected to be $145M and in 2016 to be $160M. It went up from $123M to $133M this year. With the salary cap going up like crazy, I'm not too worried about the crazy QB contracts. Cam's contract will only be $14M in 2015 because of the option. After that, $20M/year with a $160M cap is like a $15M/year contract with a $123M cap.

I was thinking that cap would be in the higher 20 mils the other week.

Gettleman should be getting heat for some of the specific players he brought in but I do agree with not completely going off the rails against him until this next offseason unfolds.

Take Cam's #s off the potential space and we're looking at roughly 12/13 million give or take for about 8 positions not counting draft picks.  The nice thing is that it doesn't figure in the unexpected cuts or straight up pay cuts that could happen.

We should be able to add a good and proven vet or two this coming offseason.

Your numbers are a bit misleading.  There are some other things you have to include.

That 130m number is only for 40 players.

If you add 13 players making 500k (close to league minimum) that adds 6.5 million. 130 + 6.5 = 136.5m

Practice squad is around 1m                                                                                        136.5 + 1=  137.5m

You have to save some for IR, lets say 2m                                                                   137.5 + 2= 139.5m

Also some of next years rookies will make more then 500k so you have to

account for the difference. 2m                                                                                        139.5 + 2=141.5m

If the cap goes to 135m and if we rollover 6m that puts our projected cap at 141.m.

In this scenario we are over the cap by .5m.  And this is with us filling out our roster at 500k per person for the 13 empty spots.  500k is actually less the league minimum for veterans.

As far as CJ goes you can't really gain 9 million unless you add years to it.  Not sure if we want to do that though.  If you gain 5 million you will also add 5 million to 2016.  I could see us letting him go though which would free up 10 million next year.

You are correct on Godfrey and Decoud though.  Cutting them would free up 6 million.

Cutting Williams as a June 1st cut frees up 2 million in space for 2015 but adds 2 million in 2016.

When you look at next years numbers a lot of the decisions that DG has made start to make a lot more sense.

Letting CJ go frees up 6 mil while creating 14 mil in dead money. His cap hit is 20.

Dwill has a cap hit of 6 and still owed 6 in guaranteed(what causes dead money). He gives us 6 in cap space in 2015 but cause 6 in dead on 2016 if June 1st cut.

I took for granted people could see that we have to build a 53 man roster, but we aren't slated to lose anyone high profile except for Hardy

For some people if you tell them we have 20 million in cap space they get excited and think we can sign two players at 10 million each. They don't account for the other 10 roster spots.

For CJ I was referring to designating him a June 1st cut.

If you make DWill a June 1st cut his cap hit for 2015 would be roughly 4.4 million instead of 6.3. Around 2 million in savings but we would have 2.2 m in 2016.

I'm all for Defensive FA and take BOPA each round. Tevin Coleman and Kevin White out of this draft! Would also like to see a TE to replace Dickson that actually makes our 2 TE sets scary

Williams, if he ever saw the field(well more often then he currently does) would make our 2 TE sets scary.

And when does the search for the next "franchise QB" begin and how much is going to be spent on him?

I firmly believe Cam Newton is going to test the FA market and he'll listen to offers. If he happens to make a decision that does not involve Charlotte, it will crack this team to the core, regardless of salary cap.

great post up until the stewart bash. he was strong as fug yesterday , being patient and he looked like a mule that wouldn't go down. He also has a burst when he hits the hole downhill. to be sure his injuries are over????? hopefully
