Ron Rivera is still terrible at clock management

The timeout management was bad not calling one after Benjamin's catch but in my opinion the big problem is calling 2 running plays forcing you to burn 2 timeouts right off the bat. I know Shula calls the plays but you know he's talking to Ron in the head set and calls the type of play Ron wants. That whole 2 minute drill was just awful management all around.

Also Ron Ron is not so good at the challenges.

I was listening on sat radio and it seemed the spot of the ball or something like that was not in question and meathead throws the red flag anyway.

Call me a homer...but that challenge was justified. That was a bad spot by the refs. It should have been challenged. The fugging refs were all about Green Bay.

He's stubborn. People are scared of what they're unfamiliar with, and he's not used to relying on the offense to win games.

The Cinncinati game was a prime example of Rivera's stubbornness.

The Bengals had zero resistance all day from Carolina's defense. They moved the ball at will, putting up 37 points in the process.

So Rivera decides against going for a 4th and 2, against leaving his team's fate in the hands of it's most dynamic threat. Instead he gives the Bengals the ball in a sudden death situation. The bengals only needed to get into field goal range for a chance to win.

Nugent went on to miss the field goal as we know. But I bet if you run the probability on that FG being missed, it's probably somewhere less than 5%.

Yea he has to put more trust in Cam and the offense in general to get it done. There were a couple 4th downs against GB that I thought he should have gone for as well. But also the offense shouldn't have to depend on 4th down to score or get the 1st down, they need to get the job done and they failed last week.

Yeah that is definitely concerning. His challenges are just as bad too.

I said it in another thread, but about the only time we see Ron show some balls or catch of a glimpse of Riverboat anymore is when he is gambling our timeouts on challenges that it's clear to everyone in the world we aren't going to win, yet Rivera still throws the flag anyway.

He seemed to have finally gotten "it" after that Buffalo loss last year if you heard his comments about how much the loss bothered him. But since then much of the progress he made seems to have simply went out the window. Remember when we went for it on 4th and long in Miami?

I'm worried that he is simply too stubborn to ever fully change, and take that next step as a head coach. I really want to see him succeed here.

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
