Playoff hopes?

detroit looked very good after their first second third and fourth preseason games last year.

7 playoff teams lost their first preseason games last year. meanwhile (in addition to detroit) seattle, kansas city, oakland, seattle, and cincy all won.

pre-season is an indicator of a few thing but not of how the season is going to go. you want to know what teams have to work on and improve....you play preseason games. those who want to win the most when it matters will allow themselves to have all their flaws exposed in games that carry no weight in order to give them a chance to improve and work to correct them before the season starts. panthers found their flaws in spades. there is still over 3 weeks to get things worked out and 3 more games to see just how well they have addressed needs.

For all the sky is falling people out there, do you even know what was happening last night? I know your flippant response is likely to be that we were getting our asses handed to us or something similar, but that would miss the real mark. What was happening is that we played a very vanilla game...actually not just vanilla, but a vanilla bean game (not even as complicated as normal vanilla). In other words, since we are playing the Giants during the regular season, we showed even less than we would have during a normal first game of the preseason.

Oh, and the Giants had their guards pulling, blitzed, used stunts, and some of the other techniques that are central to their scheme. Not to the extent or as complicated as we’ll see during the season, but enough that it was a big advantage in last night’s game. In case you either forgot or didn't know, Tom Coughlin likes to do this during the preseason games...even the early ones.

So to freak out over this one game is not only silly, but misses the point of what the preseason games really are for...evaluation and implementation under actual game conditions.

    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
    • Sounds like Veesaar is entering the draft. He could always test the waters and pull out and return but without him our big men look like a serious liability. Better do something in the portal. If they don't do something about this portal madness my days as a college sports fan are probably numbered. This bullshit of having a nearly entirely new team every season is gonna get old fast.
