Breaking down that 4th & 1 play..

We all know this play was going to define the rest of the game. Watching live i was scratching my head at the formation (why distance yourself from the marker?) but i assumed we were going to run power with Cam. Anyways, lets take a look at why this play might not have succeeded...

Heres the pre snap look:

We see a single high look, and bringing Avant in motion revealed what looked like man coverage at least on that side. The OLB outside of cotchery is playing wide and keeping outside leverage.

Post snap you can see KB manned up, the safety playing as a centerfielder, and on the right side theres some sort of trap coverage, and since Olsen and Cotch released the way they did, it ended up pretty much being a Cover 1 look, with cotchery manned up with an OLB.

Cams first read(see below) after he freezes the safety looks to be KB running a skinny post/slant, but he sees the LB buzzing, so thats a no go.

As cam completes his drop back his eyes shift towards the middle of the field, you can see the buzzing linebackers plant and start heading towards the underneath routes. Also notice that the underneath route is still basically at the line of scrimmage and while hindsight might say to still throw that ball, it wasnt a sure thing that there would have been enough room to get the first down(if the ball didnt get batted at the line first).

Here you can basically see that Cam is looking at what the safety is doing in relation to Olsen running up the seam, and later realizes he has a one on one matchup that he likes.

After looking at the play a couple of times, its really hard to say what coulda/shoulda happened. I didnt like the throw obviously, but its a matchup you want. The playcall is what bugged me. Shula took 4th and 1 and made it 4th and 6 just because.

What do you guys think?

Three deep routes on a 4th and 1 with our QB in the shotgun. Shula takes a high percentage play and makes it a low percentage play. Still think stewart was open out of the backfield there but Cam never looked his way. He ended up throwing a terrible pass out of bounds that had no chance. Cotchery wasn't even close to open anyway.

Honestly the only thing I notice is the OL going from the line of scrimmage, to about 6 yards behind it by the final picture.

Even when Cam has time, the play calls are laugable and he's being pushed backwards, so if he has to scramble, he's now got a longer hike.

I don't think you can fault the oline on this play, the held and gave him enough time to make a play. There is no oline that will stay on the same yard line the ball was spiked for that long.

I was told Olsen was wide open on this play. He had a corner on him along with a safety in the middle

Avant was underneath but having to help this weak ass oline delayed his route wit that chip block

Im my personal opinion for the rest of the season, I would literally do my best Clausen impression if I was Cam. Just dump the poo off, wateva happens whether they get the 1st down or not is on them. Even if it means 3 and outs, so what. fug this coaching staff, slow receivers, weak oline needing help, and 90s offensive system

And also he had Stewart who could have gotten the first down in the flats, if this was a first or second down, i would agree with the shot Cam took but it's freaking fourth down, pick up the first down and live another day.

Watching the play full speed it would have been another tough choice because the LB that buzzed underneath KB planted when he saw stew leaked. I do trust stew in that situation though to break the tackle.

Actually I am just seeing Avant open. A lob to him and he could basically just dive for the first down. Anyways, it's done and I am sure Cam will learn from this tape.

That is what Cam must learn, there are other footballers on the team, trust them to make a play, you are not the only one who can make plays. Give them a chance. That was why Olsen was pissed in the end zone on the replay, you could see him throw his hands. Give them an opportunity to make a play.

Yea he would have been my choice. At that point it was 24-7 so I guess Cam was looking big instead of small. Cam started to do it later in the game. He should do it for the rest of the season. How Fox used to say it, its just is what it is

    • Agreed. I actually asked Chat GTP why are centers so important to the O-line. You'll find their response interesting. The center is absolutely critical to the offensive line, even though he rarely gets the spotlight. Here’s why: 🧠 1. He’s the “quarterback” of the offensive line The center identifies the defensive front before the snap — calling out who the “Mike” linebacker is and setting protection assignments for the guards and tackles. He adjusts the blocking scheme based on shifts, stunts, and blitz looks. In most offenses, the QB and center share communication responsibilities, but the center’s call is often what the rest of the line follows. 🗣️ Without a smart, communicative center, the whole line can fall apart under pressure or disguise. 🏗️ 2. He’s central to blocking coordination The center is literally the pivot point — coordinating combo blocks, zone steps, and double-teams with both guards. In zone-blocking schemes, he’s essential for lateral movement, reading the defensive tackle’s leverage, and passing off blocks smoothly. A poor center can destroy run-game timing or allow penetration that blows up plays before they start. ⚙️ 3. He handles some of the toughest matchups Centers face nose tackles — often the biggest, strongest player on the defense — directly over the ball. He has to snap accurately, then instantly anchor against 300+ lbs of power, often with one hand still finishing the snap motion. That’s one of the most technically demanding jobs in football. 🧩 4. He ties the line together mentally and physically The center’s ability to recognize stunts, delayed blitzes, and coverage disguises helps the entire line stay in sync. If a guard or tackle makes a mistake, the center can often help bail them out through quick adjustment calls or recovery blocks. A great center also brings leadership and stability — think of guys like Jason Kelce, Travis Frederick, or Alex Mack — they elevated everyone around them. 🔍 5. Why some teams don’t draft centers early Despite the importance, centers rarely go in Round 1 because their positional value (impact on points/wins per dollar or cap hit) is lower than QB, LT, Edge, or CB. But analytically, a great center can add similar efficiency gains to a good left tackle by reducing QB pressure and improving run-game consistency. 🟩 In short:
    • This is true. Except when it isn’t. I mean he is not consistent.  He does a lot of the same stuff he was soing in 2023. Hate to say it but I see it.  That is what I mean by internalized. It is not ingrained in him and he randomly goes back to his bad stuff - gets rattled or something. Over something. I don’t t know what triggers it but it all juat flies away and you have the plqykng scared afraid to get hit Bryce. Bails early. The failure footwork comes back, the whole deal.  That is why we have to hope he plays all the games so we can document where he really is at.
    • easier question:  With the numbers I just listed, in his 3rd year, what is there to support?  What do you see that we arent seeing?
