Panthers and the Salary Cap

Smith looks like the aging old guy we watched all last season.

He bottled up his rage and caught some lucky breaks leading up to the Carolina games.....you watched 89 since his revenge game? He hasn't been doing much.

Pace slowing, production declining for Steve Smith in past four games

He had a bump against the Saints, but last week he only caught one pass for two yards.

Careful now - Smitty might call in to the huddle podcast to set the record straight.

I'd actually say he made a good decision not making the kind of offers that other teams made for the average to underachieving tackles that were on the market last offseason.

Bell is a free agent next year and Chandler's contract is easily dumpable.  So yes, our tackles suck, but we're not tied to them.

Imagine if we'd made a four or five year commitment to someone and then had them suck?  We''d be in an even worse spot than now.

Imagine if we had let Hardy walk and signed 3-4 players to multi year deals like some on here wanted.  The numbers would have worked this year but next year would be a mess.  We might have been forced to cut Kalil, Davis, and CJ.

By being disciplined DG gave himself some options.  He might not have to ask a player to take a pay cut and have them retire early.

Valid point.

Smith doesn't seem to be declining and we are still paying him.

24 Rec 390 Yd 2 Td over the past 8 games. The only reason he had big numbers over the first 4 weeks is because he was butthurt & trying to prove a point. He wore his tiny, old ass out in one month. That, & he doesn't care now that he's played Carolina.

48 Rec 780 Yd 4 Td over a season. And that's playing in a pass heavy offense with a SB MVP QB.

Stop daydreaming about....

...in 8 games since playing Carolina. Two reasons why his production fell off a cliff.

1) he doesn't care. He's back to his old, unmotivated self just like he was in 2010 & 2013. He's just collecting a check. He cared the first 4 weeks. He was butthurt & thought he was proving a point to DG.

2) he's wore out. He spent all that energy over the summer & first 4 weeks & wore his little old ass out.

I guess Aaron Wilson must be a funny guy too (he wrote the article).

It's reactionary and I have no idea who that guy is.

So Steve Smith was prolific his entire career until October 26th of 2014 and is now washed up (except you have to ignore another game where he had great stats.)

Got it.

Oy

And yes, Smith started dropping off after they played us.  This past weekend might have been his lowest production ever.

I think he's a Baltimore Ravens beat writer that reports information about the Panthers quicker than Joe Person.
