The signing of Kaesviharn is roughly the equivalent of signing Eugene Robinson a few years back (i.e. not much out there, pick up a vet and hope he can fill a gap or two and be a good influence on the young guys).

That said, I wouldn't assume Kaesviharn makes the final roster just because he's a vet. A lot can happen between now and final cuts.

hopefully teal can show himself to be solid at FS. he hasn't been too bad at all in practices and has done ok in the games. i'm anxious to see what he does with the first team.

The truth is that there has been a GLARING hole at FS ever since Minter moved away from it. The last time we had two capable S playing at the same time was Deon Grant and Mike Minter in '03.

My one request for Hurney, who has otherwise done a great job at the draft table, is PLEASE stop picking sliding cornerbacks down the draft board and moving them to safety. It's not working. Sherrod Martin and Charles Godfrey both have been terrible there in early returns.

Either make the leap and sign a premier free agent for the FS position or draft an honest to God safety in the near future.

Kaesviharn is here to play out the preseason only. He'll be in the final cuts and Godfrey will play the Eagles with a cast on his hand if he has to.

At least Carter has time to try and catch on elsewhere.

Yeah, that has been my complaint as of late. They try to potentially fill 2 spots with one guy and it always blows up in their faces. I think Thomas Davis started this trend--thank god he worked out at LB.

Martin is doing well. The few catches he's given up he's brought the guy down immediately. He's good in run support. How has he been terrible?

Godfrey had 61 tackles as a rookie. He made some mistakes, but he also made some great plays. He had a good year for a FS, not excellent, but good. And as a rookie what more do you want? He's hasn't been great this preseason, but he's not alone there. So again, not terrible. Teal might be better. Guess we'll see.

I don't know that anyone is giving up on him - he was very solid at the start of last year. However, this year is not last year and the little bit that he's shown has not been good and now he's hurt; time to find someone else to play while he can't.

I still think he can turn the corner, but won't his injury keep him off the field for a month or so? Out of the players already on the roster, I'd like to see Teal back there for that time.

Our inability to replace Minter had us go with Godfrey and place him there. He's just there to hold down the spot IMO

Cause he's not there so his talents can excel him to be the best. He's naturally a corner, instinct and speed of a corner. He's also physical too. Obviously the coaching staff wasnt confident about Salley or Teal

I think Charles Godfrey is below NFL average at the FS position. Rarely last year did I say, "Thank God we had Godfrey back there", because it didn't happen much. Now, I'm not so bold as to say he'll never work out there, but the chances of him becoming above NFL average at that position are MUCH weaker than his ability to potentially become an above average NFL corner. For a corner, he tackles very well. As a safety, he tackles fairly poorly. Godfrey did a good job holding people up until help arrived, but he can hardly bring people down alone.... which is expected for a corner.

The more concerning thing has been seeing Chris Harris a step behind the play and missing tackles. We can ill afford to have both safety positions occupied by people unable to play the position. I am a HUGE fan of Harris, but he has slowly trailed off in performance last year and in early returns this year.

It's not going to be long before we need to address this position. A safety should be your roving playmaker in the secondary. The corners are just there to not get beat, but if you have a safety that is truly a good ball hawk, then your defense gets twice as strong. Look what Ed Reed and Bob Sanders do for the Ravens and Colts. Troy Polamalu for the Steelers. Adrian Wilson for Arizona. Nick Collins for Green Bay. Brian Dawkins for the Broncos. The list goes on and on there.

If you want an elite defense, you need one of those guys back there making trouble.
