Ravens tell Smith to take a little time out

Mr. Scot

It's conceivable that if they want him to take a reduced role, they might also want him to take a reduction in salary to go along with it.

Also possible that if he's not on board with those ideas, they could just say "see ya".

Could be interesting to watch, for sure.

Steve, probably didn't realize when he went to Baltimore, that Newsome's as hard-balled and systematic as Gettleman (with maybe a title  more discretion and PR spin). :phew:

These things never usually end well, when they start of this way.

Not hard to figure out at all..............Smith is an individual from an inner city street background........football has been his ticket into mainstream society however he's been conditioned over time to fighting and clawing his way from the streets to get what he wants......

Well that works on the streets but in a locker room of team sports in corporate America today that Napoleon complex he has can wear on anyone after awhile...................and also consider that WRs in general tend to have a me complex in a team sport.

I'm sure the Ravens got more than they bargained for with Smith both in performance and attitude..........

Its like a new employee trying to dictate ownership/management strategy moving forward...........so they told me to sit on it and we will get back to you.

Gotta admit, It does kinda sound like they're saying, "Hey, we'd sure love to have ya, but are you sure you wanna come back? I mean, really sure?"

I honestly can't recall ever seeing a team tell a veteran player who said he was coming back to 'think about it'.

Maybe not worth the money.  Who knows?  It's obvious that SS is not who he use to be.  Also, maybe the altercation he had after the playoffs has something to do with it.

That inner city BS excuse expired a long time ago. He has been a multi-millionaire for over a decade. He's been given dozens of do-overs after stupid decisions. Smith is just an idiot.

I'm sure as an aging player, Smitty really enjoyed hearing that he needs to "take a nap." Lol

After his first touchdown with whomever next year, he's going to be in the camera screaming, "YOU THOUGHT I NEEDED A NAP ?!?!?!?!"

I wonder if he threatened to fight them?  Wouldn't surprise me.

Well, they've had a year to get to know him.  And yeah, that incident doesn't really reflect well.

Sounds to me they are telling him.....maybe think about retiring

Doubt the Ravens want there O going through 89 next year (as they implied about a reduced role).....bet there wondering what it will be like to deal with him in that reduced role

Goes back to why he isn't a Panther.....in a reduced role do you and your team want to spent that much energy in dealing with him

Well, our fans still can't figure it out but Ravens fans seem to know. Via Ravens Talk;

Dec 21st 2014

I've noticed all season long that he'll jog through routes if we're losing or if he's not getting targeted. Now I see the bad side of his diva attitude. I'm seeing why Carolina cut him. When we signed him I was laughing at them and thought their new GM was a dumbass. He looks like a genius right about now. With grapefruits swinging between his legs for straight cutting the all-time face of that franchise. Benjamin had a great rookie year and is a flat out stud. I bet Smith would've been a terrible headache for them. Watching Cam take over as the leader and a rookie WR replace him. He would've ruined that team with his attitude.

essentially, yes... he may have placed himself as T.O. status.

    • You're not understanding what I'm saying. I'm saying that truly elite players will always have a market because they're elite difference makers and that at the "devalued positions" the NFL has discovered that those are spots where unless you have an elite talent there you have an opportunity to get similar results out of run of the mill talent for run of the mill money compared to good talent for good money. The drop off in overall unit performance isn't dramatic dropping down from "good" to "JAG" and it saves money to invest in the premium positions. It's about skill sets and what is hardest to find, simple supply and demand. There's just more serviceable LBs and RBs and safeties out there than their are CBs and pass rushers and QBs. And honestly, a big part of our historic lack of consistent success has been investing too many premium draft and cap resources into those devalued positions. Yeah, we've had a lot of great off the ball LBs and RBs on our way to be a franchise with an overall losing record. Pointing to our success at those positions is proving my point because I just point to our W-L record and overall lack of historical quality at premium positions like QB, WR, CB, etc. We've sucked in large part because we've valued the wrong position groups. In a vacuum it doesn't matter. But in actuality every high pick or big chunk of cap you spend on an off the ball LB or RB or IOL is a high pick or big chunk of cap you couldn't spend on a QB or CB or WR or OT.
    • Right before Kuechly retired, we had some of the worst D line play that year.  We were ranked 29th against the run in 2019.   I remember even Kuechly struggled to get off the blocks at times because the linemen were on second level so quickly due to our porous line made up of Kyle Love, Vernon Butler and a washed up Gerald McCoy.
    • fingers crossed for BlueSky embeds to come with the board update at least all the schedule reveals will be on the youtube
