Huddle Favorite Steve Logan Signs On With 49ers As QB Coach

I just cannot believe, that Gettleman, who appears to know football quite well, would allow the Panthers to continue to have the worst Offensive staff in the league (my belief) and the proven worst special teams staff in the league.

Dorsey/ Shula, really  really.   Logan was there and he could have done wonders for Newton.

That special teams coach, Rodgers, could be given all pros and still such...I just can't believe the 'injury' excuse was accepted...players are supposed to be coached up for the next man up...apparently that's not the case here.

I just don't understand why Ron would not want the best people he could get and he settles for these people.  We can say, oh well, no talent on the offense, throughout his career, Shula had teams with talent, what happened to them?  I have never heard one player say, that was a great game plan.

Coaching staff falls under the head coach.

For Gettleman to step in would mean stepping on Rivera's toes.  It's become clear Gettleman doesn't want to do that.

he said he prefers mobility to accuracy.

I'm glad we didn't get him.

Seriously?

Hell no to that.

yes, we know there are ways.

I just believe to have the best chance to win, to get the most out of the players, the best coaching staff has to be a part of it.  If we look at the staffs of the Super Bowl contenders, there is not one Shula like character on it.  They are innovative in methodlogy and preparation.  They don't use injuries as an excuse.

That's what I want for Carolina.  I can dream, I suppose.

Believe me, I've been one of the biggest advocates for staff changes you'll find.

Three of the best special teams coaches in the NFL were available for hire within the last few weeks. Rivera ignored all of them in favor of keeping Richard Rodgers.

If the ST sucks again next year, I'm sure he'll have another excuse why it isn't the coach's fault.

Later in the interview, Logan said he’d take “mobility at the sacrifice of accuracy.” In addition to Gage, who was converted into a defensive back in the NFL, Logan has coached Jeff Blake and David Garrard at East Carolina, Matt Ryan at Boston College and spent some time with Josh Freeman with the Buccaneers.

i never saw the interview or researched accuracy of that statement, so take it with a grain of salt. his words could have been twisted.

Logan has reached legendary status for a guy whose most recent spot on the resule was a RB coach for the 21st best offense of 2011.   I get there's the local tie but the "he'd obviously do better than _______" stuff, I don't know.  He was out of work for three years.  He might be a decent coach but at least 75% of the NFL has had some level of turnover since 2011 in offensive staff.

I also think, people really underestimate that this is the O that Rivera wants.   He'd ask Mike Martz to run the ball a ton and set up 3rd down.

Only somewhat related, reading that the 9ers' staff, even before Tomsula, was expected to be a deep cost cutting measure, that they just weren't going to pay much.  Consequently, you get Tomsula, who will be one of the lowest paid coaches in the league, and his coordinators?  Geep was a coordinator last in 2000.  Mangini was, at least, a head coach, in 2010, but was out of the league for a few years.   Both were told to look elsewhere initially, and so clearly both getting promotions?  They're not Plan A.  They were not in demand.  They were inexpensive.

That's one thing - both can be quality coordinators I guess - but the incumbents were told to walk in part because of money, and they struck out hard on real candidates, again, reportedly because of money.

Would have loved to have had Geep back as a QB coach.  Not to be, I guess.

I'm neither a Logan fan nor a detractor, but the talk about him reminds me of how I hear people talk about Jon Gruden.

Being a commentator has a habit of elevating your rep in people's eyes.  In Gruden's case, we've had people clamoring for us to pay him anything he asks to coach here, apparently forgetting just how badly his last coaching stint ended.

Guess we'll see whether Logan is worth the hype or not.
