One Tackle Off the Market -- Dunlap Re-signs with Chargers

It's a good deal for the Chargers (not him if you're looking at it from a pure financial standpoint) but I couldn't have even seen us considering him at all. So no big deal really. Yes one less LT for other teams also actively searching, but also one more team no longer searching.

It's actually a pretty good deal for him. He's a much better run blocker and was just about average his career before his last 2 years with the Chargers. The Chargers offense clearly helps him out as well. He's 30. The Chargers will definitely look to groom a LT behind him and slide him to a guard spot in the next couple of years.

You would think so.

I can understand a player taking less when signing an extension before their current contract is over, but he was so close to hitting the open market.

Let's see, I can stay in an offense that clearly makes me better, get long term security for my family, and live in Southern California.

Or

I can take a gamble, and worst case, the Chargers sign Bulaga and I have to go play in Cincy.

Only chance we had was Dunlap demanding outrageous money and Gman giving it to him!

That ain't Gman style, so we never really had a chance. Barksdale isn't an option either as he is established as an average RT. Gman isn't gonna pay that bill either.

Stop gap vet Olinemen? Too much money for not enough reward, Roos/Free isn't likely either.

We are gonna see a couple young guys that have been practice squad vets at the LT position signed and brought in along with a modest resigning of Bell and Williams.

Prepare yourself as our LT position will most likely look no more promising than it did last year heading into camp. I'm envisioning a battle between:

Hairston(esqe type)

Bell

Williams

Remmers

Chandler

Rookies (possibly an UDFA)

Best run mauler gets the RT. Amini gets cut and Kug spends a year on practice squad at best

He would've made significantly more on the open market. I'm sure he's happier staying in San Diego but like I said, from a pure financial viewpoint, it wasn't a good deal for him.
