Dex's OMG no OT in the first 5 rounds mock draft.

EDIT: I HAVE SWAPPED JOHNSON AND SAMPLE TO APPEASE THE MASSES. IT MAKES MORE SENSE THE MORE I THINK ABOUT IT TOO.

Like some on here I'm too crazy about any of the OT talent in the first two rounds. I feel like there is more talent in other areas that should be taken advantage of early. I don't want Cam to die but I do want to surround him with weapons. Deal with it. I have us receiving one comp pick in the 5th round for Mike Mitchell.

Round 1

Devin Smith WR Ohio State

6'0" 196lbs 4.42 40 Time

What can I say? Is it maybe a little too early for him? Possibly on some people's draft boards. But I feel for our offense he's exactly what we need. A baller with great hands that can take the top off of defenses with his speed. He will need to work with Ricky on his concentration especially in traffic and getting YAC but he would be a great selection. Oh and DG sure does love his national champion wide receivers.

Round 2

Duke Johnson RB Miami

5'9" 207lbs 4.54 40 Time

"Dammit Dex a running back really?" Yes really. As much as we all love Stew when he's healthy his cap hit next year airs on the side of ludicrous. Also as much as I would love for Fozzy to be the second coming we need to put as many playmakers on the offense as we can. 2nd round is good value for the Duke and he can come in and contribute day one. Duke is a one read cut RB with outstanding burst. If he finds a gap he is gone.

Round 3

James Sample S Louisville

6'2" 209lbs 4.56 40 Time

Now I'm sure some of you are scratching your heads. "but Dex if we're going to take a Louisville safety in the third why not Holliman???" I'm glad you asked! Holliman is very overrated. I'm not saying he's going to be terrible but Sample is the superior athlete, ballhawk and tackler. "but Dex Sample is a 4/5 round pick right?" Another excellent point. A few months ago yes he was supposed to be a mid round pick. However now he is shooting up draft boards after evaluators were actually able to see some tape on the man. Sample is a destroyer of worlds who is not afraid to lay the wood. I can see him moving over the FS and being a terror for years.

Round 4 (Trade)

Steve Nelson CB Oregon State

5'10" 197lbs 4.49 40 Time

Yep you guessed it. DG sees Nelson has slid out of the 3rd round. But he realizes he won't last to our pick. So he trades up for yet another CB. "Dex the cap is struggling we need as many draft picks as we can!" Believe me it's not like me to trade up but Nelson is a rare talent and would fill in a nickel allowing Bene to stay on the outside. Unfortunately this time a 7th won't good enough to jump up 20 spots and it will cost us our 5th. However Gman knows we have that 5th round comp pick waiting in the breeze. Nelson reminds me of a taller but just as tenacious Munnerlyn. He's not afraid to go up against guys much bigger than him and is a downhill tackler. A perfect fit for our scheme but will need some coaching to manage his composure.

(mute that video)

Round 5 (Comp Mike Mitchell)

Ray Drew DE Georgia

6'4" 284lbs 4.79 40 Time

DG sure does love his defensive lineman and Drew has been a monster for the Bulldogs. I feel like with some proper coaching he has starter potential. Needs to put on some more weight for his play style. (bull rusher) Can be used at DT and DE.

(Only highlight video available. Couple of missed tackles to start but takes over after that.)

Round 6

Shaq Mason OG/C Georgia Tech

6'1" 301lbs 4.97 40 Time

Bring on the Hahg Mahllies. Mason is a versatile interior lineman with a bad attitude that could fill in at OG or C. Good depth but could develop into something more.

Round 7

Laurence Gibson OT Virginia Tech

6'6" 305lbs 5.04 40 Time

He came in for a visit and the Panthers seem to have an interest in him. Needs to work on his hands and technique while adding some strength. Solid depth.

(All I could really find for him)

I'm sure I'll be updating this in a few weeks but right now this is where I stand. Sorry for any errors or typos. Happy flaming. <3

If Duke fell to our pick in round 3, that'd be a good pick.  Don't know about that Sample pick though.  Props for being different than most mocks I guess.

I knew I'd catch some flack for the pick. But he is an excellent safety and shooting up boards right now. Major MAJOR sleeper.

I won't go full "you're crazy" and will do some searching and check him out a little more.  I'll be honest, I've kind of put the safety class off my radar.  I've got a mock coming that is similar in approach so actually don't mind the no OT thing but there's some mid-rounders I would like us to grab.

I like most of your picks. I agree with you about Devin Smith. We need someone to win in the middle of the field and get separation deep, Devin Smith fits the T.Y. Hilton and Antonio Brown mold. I don't think this team needs another big possession receiver like Jaelen Strong. Strong is not as fast as his 40 time indicates.  He would be another tight window that Cam has to throw into.

Would you mind posting some now so I can check them out? Or should I wait for teh davos mock draft?

Dont know much about Sample. I don't mind the 1st pick. I just think we are going to have some top prospects fall and Gettleman will scoop them up. I don't see us getting a WR in the 1st this year.

Check him out. You will fall in love.

The highlight looked nice. He seems to have good closing speed. What is he? More of an in the box safety or cover safety?

He's a bit of both. He's not one dimensional by any means. That's why I think he can move over to FS. He of course can improve in coverage though.

Daryl Williams is my favorite and would be really good value if there in the 3rd.

Jamon Brown is interesting but don't know if he'd fit in our scheme as an LT.

I knew we were really interested in Bitonio after James and KB last year and Austin Shepard is pretty similar.  A T/G unlike Chandler would be solid for depth or a starter.

I also think Rob Crisp will go higher than people are projecting much like Britt from last season.

    • Brother re-check that guarantee...my page shows 30mill.....thats means he's staying in my book for at least til the end of 2026.  Im going to be my normal honest self, besides watching like half of the SB, I didn't know the guy. My guess is Panthers have a "planned model of paying players" and they almost had to spend a chunk of space on a DLman after Dbrown injury season gave them a nightmare out-come of worst D in NFL scoring. Once Milton got above Dbrown payments, they went with the plan B. A player whom the "co-GM" put his name with. Brad said turk would not be a problem off-field and leader, which the Panthers need badly. I dug in with the google-fu, I found out  I also found him playing lots of NT, which was shocking given the small frame. He seems ready for a bigger role and had a great SB too. IDK, I feel Dan Morgan was dead set on not going into this season without more DL depth and its there. The real deal is this, nearly all FA take one year to "adjust". I think turk is trying too hard and causing injuries as a result for his contract. Dbrown called turk "strong as hell" and I know for a fact Dbrowns has insane core and strength numbers. They lift together with the 50 LB difference...... you always lift with a guy who's similar in strength cause you can leave on the 8 wheels, let the other guy lift while you rest and go after him.  I do wish he had a better beginning to his panther career, 3 games for him to do so and it would cover up the low points if he made a few plays.... Again it felt like they almost had to make move/spend $$$ and Morgan was going to have DL depth this season no matter what...My best guess.
    • There's a reason DC wasn't getting calls to be a HC. He wasn't ready. His indecisiveness is infuriating. His lack of awareness is mystifying. He jumped at the chance to grab the David Tepper retirement plan and who can really blame him. Maybe with time he can grow into the job. But we're on year 8 of our 7 year rebuild. I think I'm gonna need a hip replacement before we get a decent HC.
