Strickland gives synopsis on Gman at NFL Annual Meeting, and some of my thoughts

I have faith in Gettleman, and it's too early to get really worried since we haven't even drafted, but to say Oher solved a problem is a bit of a reach considering he was barely better than Bell.   Ginn filled the ST roll, but to say he's filled a "speed need" is a bit of a reach too.  He had some success here, but he dropped a lot of deep balls and is getting older.   The Dickson hype is unreal for a guy who had like 150 yards the entire season, I suppose we just remember that one game though.   So to reiterate, I trust DG and will patiently wait, but it seems (as usual) this board seems content on settling for mediocrity.  It seems winning the division with a losing record is the pinacle of our dreams on here.    I'm hoping we get some gems in the draft and laugh at any doubts.

I still think Jennings should be signed if reasonable and we should still draft a speed WR, because we're one Ginn injury away and one "Philly-deepball-catch-ouch-my-shoulder-hurts-again" away from being super slow.

i keep seeing people posting about "settling for mediocrity" and "oh good old huddle happy to go 8-8 and win a terrible division and never win a super bowl for all eternity" which i think is bullshit

what would sitting around with our arms crossed all offseason talking about how pissed off we all are accomplish anyway

5 years ago, winning the NFCS in back to back seasons was beyond a dream for most of us.

We have done exactly what he mentioned we would. If you misconstrue his words that is on you. Last week you were singing his praises. I respect your opinion but I think you are trying too hard to look for fault.

Yes, and if you actually live in Charlotte, you should know this as well.  It's a town that seems to be content on mediocrity.  Just look at our coaching staff and the previous one.    The fanbase just isn't there yet, but it's getting better.  Winning three in a row (with a winning record this time) will help trmendously.   This isn't just NFL either.

True, but winning it with a losing record, to me at least, doesn't even feel like a win.  We beat a team riddled with injuries and a terrible backup QB only to face the music after that, that we aren't ready for big time.  We should be looking to compete with Seattle, not with teams like Tampa.

the whole idea isn't that we're going to be happy just winning the division and losing early in the playoffs every year forever.  even then there are a lot of "model franchises" bandied about as being far superior to the panthers on this site who did just that for years before breaking through and winning titles which is how it goes in the NFL sometimes.  for once this team seems to making something resembling progress and people are guardedly optimistic.

actually the idea is that, as far as the panthers go, we're in an uncharted place as a franchise right now.  it really is okay to let go of your internet badass persona for one nano second and be happy about back to back division titles.  your dong probably won't shrivel up and fall off i promise.

if you're just whining about some kind of grand sweeping problem with the fanbase then i don't care about that.  the cleveland browns, raiders, and bills have some of the most loyal, passionate fans in the league and those teams have done less in ten years than the panthers have in the previous two.  what fans expect or will "settle for" is a fart in the wind when it comes to the actual product on the field.

There is a middle ground here.

You can have expectations without demanding to sign every free agent or spend a billion dollars.

On the flip side you can be patient and let Gettleman's plan play out.

I had to shake my head though at someone saying that we now have left tackle covered because we signed a project type of player in Michael Oher. I don't think Gettleman feels that way, not after witnessing Byron Bell for two seasons. I could be wrong though.

This is true, and we should be happy with back to backs, if for anything so we don't have to hear the statistic anymore about our division.  However, we can't rest on our laurels and not continue to improve.   I think some people are just a bit worried that our GM thinks Oher is an anwser, after he also thought Bell was an anwser last year (and Chandler).  There IS cause to worry, and posters who do worry, shouldn't get trashed because of that (normal, sky isn't falling posts that is).   Settling on Oher/Ginn is not correct, but we can have a more accurate discussion about things like this after the draft.   No one can deny DG's success in the draft so far, so that is something to definitely be excited about (esp with another 5th and 6th pick).

We should probably be more worried about Shula being around still, but that still falls back on DG a bit.

All I'm saying is one step at a time, and looks like we've finally taken the first couple of steps under Gettleman's guidance.

    • The division is most certainly wide open. The Bucs are a problem but Baker Mayfield is and will remain his own worst enemy it's a matter of when not if he has a bad game or even a stretch of bad games. As far as the Panthers they have done an admirable job of trying to address needs as best they can without pulling a Scott Fitterer and getting desperate which has only made us worse off in the past. On the Bryce subject all anyone can really say at this point is we just have to wait and see. This is the year and despite what the Panthers may say publicly doubling down and going all in on WR is as good as any sign anyone should need that they expect Bryce Young to have a very productive and convincing season. The pieces are in place. They aren't perfect but nothing ever will be. Regardless there's honestly no excuse for this staff and this team not to be able to compete in this iteration of the NFC South. Also just want to say this because I can say the hyper defensive posts already being made in here and it's probably going to be a season with highs and lows again but hopefully more highs for sure. But just because there is dialogue about a position group or a player that challenges your preconceived notions or makes you uncomfortable does not make it "hate" or "anti" this player or that player. For some people who talk a lot about nuance you would think this wouldn't need to be stated but that's where we're at.
    • If I was a coach I would preach "Don't let the refs decide the game" because as soon as you let the NFL the chance to help their bottom dollar whether it be teams that make most money or gambling then they will screw the team that doesn't fit their bottom line......is it rigged? No but do they try and make certain narratives happen abso-freakin-lutley. As I stated in a previous thread NFL players are the ones that SHOULD have all guaranteed contracts but the boot lickers on this forum disagree and argue for the billionaires in this world who own these teams, sheep
    • I wont go quite so far as to say games are rigged.  You wouldnt have to work hard to convince me there was the occasional thumb on the scale but outright rigged? nah.   but collusion on the rest of the "business" of football, sure.  No one really believes that the only time the 32 owners act as one is during the negotiations of the CBA do they?
