Would you trade Philip Rivers for Mariota?

Mr. Scot

Kevin Acee thinks the Chargers could.

Time to trade Rivers if Mariota is the man

For the unfamiliar, Kevin Acee is not some guy with a website.  He's been the Chargers beat writer for several years and he's one of the better writers out there.

If he takes this seriously, then it very well could have legs, and it would make the draft a whirlwind if it happened.

I don't get it. Philip Rivers has been pretty dang good for SD.

From the story...

Tom Telesco and Mike McCoy keep saying they want Philip Rivers to retire as a San Diego Charger.

That may well happen, even if Rivers follows through on his stated intention to play out the final year of his current contract and even if he doesn’t sign another contract with the team after this season.

The ominous reality for the Chargers is that there is no telling what happens with their franchise quarterback.

Despite some inside Chargers Park pressing the narrative that the Los Angeles factor is overblown, the team knows it is not.

There are numerous people in the organization dreading a move to L.A. as much as Rivers is. Everyone knows it is possible – some even believe likely – the team will move in 2016 or ’17.

The only real control the Chargers have with their quarterback is now, this offseason.

So – and this is difficult to think, let alone write – they need to trade Rivers.

Apparently, Rivers doesn't want to stay with the team if they move to Los Angeles, which Acee seems to think is a very real possibility (and that's probably a topic in itself).

Why would the Titans be so dumb to trade the #2 pick for a 33 y.o QB? it's going to have to take more than that

Ownership is in flux and the coach and GM have to worry about their jobs. Getting Rivers instantly turns around the team and puts them in playoff contention which gives them more time. A playoff team probably makes them more valuable if they are sold and the coach and GM will probably get at least 3 more years of job security with Rivers at QB.

Acee believes Rivers has at least five good years left in him.

Definitely possible which is why I said at least 3 years, but in his mid-late 30's there is really no telling how well his body will hold up and there have been rumors his back is already kind of messed up.

    • I mean, no I’m not going to panic when he got 2 Qs and looked great in 1 and looked not great in another (let’s not mention the drop).    Yeah we finally have a team that would be considered average offensively around him. Let’s roll this season.
    • The woe is me everything but Bryce sucks mantra is stale af my friend. Look nobody here is going to argue with the fact Frank Reich was not a good head coach. At the same time. Bryce Young is now in his second season with his second coaching staff and a handpicked young offensive head coach who has been known for working with QB's such as Baker and Geno. As far as the offensive pieces around Bryce we have the 4th highest salary cap allocation (that might be even higher now after the new Moton deal) dedicated to the OL in the entire league. We have 2 first round WR's one of them 8th overall the first time we've ever selected a WR that high in franchise history. And the fact of the matter is Bryce Young did not have a good preseason. It's not the first time it's happened either. We all hope to see he and the rest of the team flip a switch in week 1. But we should all be able to agree that the offensive performances we've seen from the entire QB room (Bryce included) in preseason was simply unacceptable.
    • We have seen Bryce play… what… 9 games with AT BEST what one would consider NFL average WRs? You just can’t see the forest for the trees and keep going back to your lazy take of revisionist history.    he looked AWFUL Y1 with the worst coaching I’ve ever seen in the NFL and one of the weakest WR rooms I can recall. He looked awful first half of y2 and great second half of y2 with average coaching and average skill position. I don’t know where this elite talent argument even comes from.
