I agree that Goodson has been impressive thus far, but it would be nice to get a real update on Stewart before the season starts and they surprise us with bad news.

if someone has a sore achilles tendon, what is the doctor going to tell you to do so it can get in good shape and lessen the chances of it growing into a bigger problem?

I can't believe that this guy has been out THIS LONG just for a sore achilles. If that is all that it is and it hasn't ballooned into something terrible then I expect him to play. The injury just sucks really bad because it hurts so bad that even when it is healing, players still think they are badly injured.

If he has been in a walking boot this whole time then I think its a really bad sign. If they haven't even taken the precaution of putting him in a boot then I think he will be ready in time. The guy just needs to get fully healthy tho..Right now I trust that our backfield is in good hands with Deangelo and Goodson. Our line is going to create holes for backs no matter who they are so I'm not overly concerned. It just feels like we are in for a rough year tho and until we get on the field and beat the Eagles I'm not going to feel any differently.

I think he is gonna be under the knife soon IMO. He should be progressing and hes not. I also thing thats why drafting Goodson was a good Idea.

makes you wonder if the team saw this coming(Stewart being injury riddled) and made a pro-active decision with Goodsen available?

we sure could've used a DT with that pick, but maybe they get JStewart healthy enough and move him for a good DT somewhere?

If he's healthy, and is young, I'd think he could be swapped for a good DT

The second opinion could be ominous but not necessarily so. Suppose the team cleared him to play and he just wanted another opinion before he actually plays again. Might be making sure that everything is okay. Might have just gone to Andrews who looked out for his toe as well. Time will tell.

IMO our running game is going to struggle a little this year regardless of who is back there. Teams will stack the box and make Jake beat them. And if our defense is any indication of how it will be in the reg. season, we will likely be playing from behind in some games and will have to throw.

I know you found out some information on it but thought I would chuck in my two cents.

I had achilles tendonitis in both feet last summer, tried to play through it and subsequently was forced to spend a few hundreds pounds on physio appointments. You simply can't play through it, at all. It also never truely heals, ever. So what this means is that Stewart will have a never ending battle to keep his achilles supple enough to prevent the inflammation. Pretty tough stuff considering it's a tendon.

Unfortunately they are seriously slow at healing as well because they pretty much lack a blood supply, so you have to resort to ultrasound treatments to shock the tissues into forcing fluid through it. I was told I may have to have at least a six month lay off, but settled for two months and now have stiffness in both that I have to constantly work at to prevent them from stopping me walking. It's not as bad as it sounds and as long as you stretch them properly three, four times a day, then you stay on top of it.

It generally comes about due to an imbalance between your shin and calf muscles, consistent trauma to your heels or tight calf muscles. The actually problem is that if it because sore, it gets inflammed, which pulls on the tendon more, subsequently making it tighter. It's a real life spiral of decline, so catching it early is paramount. The causes are very similar to what cause shin splints and stress fractures. In fact one usually leads to the other if ignored.

Now I do not nearly carry the weight he does and do do nto nearly put as much strain and pressure on them when running, so I would hazzard a guess that his is a serious case. The lack of walking boots are a great sign as that is the final step as it keeps the tendon at the correct angle all day and slowly stretches it out without causing imflammation.

To answer your question.

Doctor's would say rest and only rest. A physio would say rest and treat it with ultrasound and try to loosen the surrounding muscles. When they say rest they mean nothing more than walking and preferably as little of that as possible.

It seems there's an unspoken rule that one should never be an optimist in football. For goodness sakes, what is Stewart going to do the preseason that's worth him injuring his achilles even further? So he's not practicing, well that's because he shouldn't.

In addition he's working with the strength and conditioning program, if he was as bad as you want to believe it is, then he wouldn't be doing that either.

When he doesn't suit up for Philly, worry all you want, till then, all this gloom and doom prognosticating is just for the sake of starting a thread and appealing to the weak and impatient fans that want to believe things are bad, when they really aren't.

I agree...think about it. why else would we be giving Birmingham so many carries this preseason since it would be obvious there is not a roster spot for him? because they do not expect to see Stewart anytime soon.

How about because the depth chart goes...34,28,33, 24? If you get rid of 28, then 24 assumes the role of 33. If you get rid of 34 and 28, then 33 becomes 34 and 24 becomes 28. Sorry I had to break it down in this rudimentary form, but it is the only way some of you will ever learn the simple basics of depth charts and coaching. Thus, ending up in the equal split that Stewart and Williams enjoyed last year.

You don't get rid of a solid RB like Birmingham, knowing fully well Stewart's achilles might not last through the season, however, that in no way means Stewart isn't expected to play through it in the regular season either.
