Cap space post Davis signing

Captain Morgan

If I'm not mistaken, given that TD's salary stayed $7.25m and he got $9m to sign, prorated over 3 years, that brings his 2015 cap # to $10.25m, which actually slices our cap space nominally ($9.9m cap number before extension vs. $10.25m now).

That $10.25m number referenced in the article refers to how much TD will receive in the first year of the contract, not his cap cost.  If his signing bonus is $9m that would leave his base salary at $1.25m for 2015.  Signing bonuses are paid upfront but are prorated for cap purposes over the life of the contract.

Spotrac.com has his 2015 cap hit at $6.65m which would be a little over a $3m savings this year.  2018 is listed as a voidable year so I am fairly sure that we could actually spread that $9m over 4 years instead of 3 if we wanted.  If that was the case we would save even more on the cap at the beginning of the contract.  Spotrac.com has it prorated over 3 years so I'll go with that for now.

Old contract (TD's perspective) - $7.25m for one year

New contract (TD's perspective) - $18m for 3 years

Old contract (cap perspective) - $12.9m for one year of service <$9.9m cap hit in 2015 and $3m in dead money spread over 3 voidable years>

New Contract (cap perspective) - $23.4m for 3 years of service <The team still has $5.4m in dead money on the books for TD that has to be accounted for on top of the new contract.>

Overall I think it is a fair deal for both sides.  Based on his recent production $6m a year average is very fair for the team.  Based on his age that number and the amount guaranteed seems very fair to TD.

Good GMs will claim you have to take emotion out of the decision process.  TD might be the one player where that is impossible.
