Historical Correlation between 3rd Preseason Game and Season Record (for last 12 seasons)

So I was intrigued by the idea that the 3rd preseason game is an indicator of how the season will pan out.

The performance of the players in that game might be telling of the season to come, sure, but the actual game outcome does not.

It turns out that there is no correlation between the outcome of the this game and season record.

Here is what I put together. Have a look....

I plugged your data into excel to run a quick OLS regression.  Using Panthers wins/losses, point differential, and opponent's record as independent variables and Panthers season record as the dependent variable, I only get an R^2 of ~.36.  None of the p-values appear significant, so as a whole the regression doesn't seem to tell us much.  When I regress Panthers season record on point differential, I still end up with a ~.35 R^2 and the p-value is much lower.  Seems like the point differential has the most predictive power. (I realize this is by no means a thorough statistical analysis - my intent is just to provide info to those who are curious)

I agree, that's why I included the point differential.

I also thought that the strength of the teams we beat would also have a correctional to the season to come, but it doesn't.

Yep - surprising.  BTW - thank you for pulling the data together.

50% is a direct correlation?

I think not.

8 preseason 3rd games won, only 4 winning seasons.

Now do the same for the rest of the league.

I think you misunderstood my post. I state that there is no correlation...

    • I thought this presented an interesting point. It is fair to wonder now, about switching the two QBs as so many tried to do that first year where Bryce was trash and CJ looked great.  It is almost the reverse scenario now and I wonder what CJ would look like here with better weapons better coaching and better protection. Overall, compared year one.  If each player had been in the other place for the three years. I would love to see CJ with this team now.  Just to see.
    • I really have no clue what to expect sunday.  To quote one of my favorite bands of all time, Operation Ivy "All I know is that I dont know".  We could win, hell we could win convincingly, we also could lose in blowout fashion.  We could be in a back and forth game with whoever has the ball last winning.  I legit HAVE NO CLUE.  This isnt the dominant bills teams of the past, Allen is still elite and can win any game by himself.  That said, heres my stab at looking at things. Our defense is made to stop this kind of team.  Strong against the run, a great corner but meh talent around the field.  We've stopped prolific run offenses this season.   Javonte Williams - Season low yards and ypa against us. De'Von Achane - Season low yards and ypa against us Breece hall - 3rd worst yards in a game Fact of the matter is, we arent what we were last year, we are a good run defense and that lines up well against the bills, Stop the run.  For once the lack of moving Jaycee might be a good thing, he will essentially lock down a side and without multiple real weapons thats fine.  Buffalo does not have an elite guy, theyve got a gaggle of average dudes.  Allen will stay away from Jaycee, it will be on Mike Jack and Chau Smith Wade do to their part and they will be matched with guys they can play at the level of. On offense, we do what the bills are bad at.  We run the ball well, and they suck at stopping the run.  Rico and Chuba will need 30 carries.  Andy Dalton will need to be opportunistic.  My big fear is what we learned last year, Dalton can get overconfident and make bonehead throws.  Its this simple.  Run the ball, stop the run.  Dont turn the ball over.  If we do these 3 things, we will be in a position to win in the 4th quarter.
    • This makes me wish we took a flyer on Quinn Ewers late in the draft
