CAP may get significant playing time right from the start

Interesting article by Scott Fowler in today's Observer.  It sounds like from something Ron told Scott, J. Stew may be limited to about 15 carries per game, meaning CAP may be getting significant play time right from week 1.  Wow.   I wonder if Wegher will be active?  I've been assuming he won't be, but if Stew is limited to this amount of carries, maybe we'll want more RBs to share the load.

If you are a Carolina Panthers fan looking for a breakout star in Week 1 at Jacksonville, I just might have your guy: Cameron Artis-Payne.

Artis-Payne has established himself as Jonathan Stewart’s primary backup at tailback. The rookie has the burst you would expect from a player who rushed for 1,608 yards at Auburn last season. He wears No. 34, which was DeAngelo Williams’ old number, and he darts around a little like Williams as well.

When I asked Ron Rivera this past week if he could foresee Stewart getting 25 carries per game this season, Rivera dismissed that idea. He said more like 15 carries per game for Stewart would be ideal. The Panthers are well aware of his injury history – he missed 20 of a possible 48 games from 2012-14 because of various injuries – and want to keep him healthy.

When Carolina closed last season (including the playoffs) with a 5-1 record, Stewart carried the ball at least 20 times in four of those six games and ran for at least 120 yards three times. But if the Panthers are truly serious about keeping his carries to around 15, then Artis-Payne may be getting 6-8 carries per game right from the start.

So, of our rookies:

  • Shaq is starting.
  • CAP is already being planned on for a big role behind J Stew to keep him healthy.
  • Funchess will probably get significant snaps, but his role and impact is still a bit hard to judge given our messed up WR situation and his lack of preseason snaps with Cam.
  • D. Williams will almost certainly be playing RT when Remmers moves in to Center to replace Kalil who will be on a limited snap count.
  • David Mayo - largely being ignored by most observers, but will probably have some wow ST tackles...

Just amazing!   All 5 of our rookies playing and possibly having significant impact in week 1?!?!  Really?!  Is that unheard of?  Has a team ever played 100% of its rookies in game 1 unless they're leading by something like 30 points, or completely in "rebuilding, our season is shot to hell mode, and we need to get these guys experience" ?  (ok, I know we had a very small draft class..., but STILL.  This is just mad.)

I guess none of this is really "news" to any of us who have been watching the preseason.  It's been obvious all 5 can have a solid role & impact quickly.  But dang, to see that bit about CAP in writing today just solidified this all for me.

I love the comment posted on the Observer article I just linked and can't resist copying it here.

Charles C Bright  I hope to see "CAP and ZAP", Artis-Payne and Wegher getting the bulk of the carries. They gain much needed experience and can do an excellent job while saving Stewart's legs for the killer 2nd quarter games against murderer's row.

CAP & ZAP, oh that's too good!  LOL.     Also "murderers row" to describe our brutal week 6 - 10 stretch.  Yeah, sounds about right.

Have always been a believer Stewart is at his best with a heavy workload.  Last season he got that load and was a beast.

I like CAP but there is little reason not to use 28 to his fullest in what could be his last or 2nd to last year here

Stewart looked terrible all preseason and CAP was the dominant runner. If it wasn't for Stewart's contract and the fact he's a vet, he'd be the #2 RB right now.

b/c of preseason?   28 was a beast down the stretch.    That was with a load.

you can't give 28 just 4 carries in preseason and expect him to show anything.  He grinds people.

I know stew needs reps to get in a groove. But again this is the first game. Gotta get his legs under him. He has barely ran in preseason.

got no beef with that.  But if there goal is for 15 carries this year to be an ideal max for him....I don't like that
