what guitar should i get?

i've played for ten years now. the nicest thing i've ever owned was an epiphone - one was a les paul and the other a dot, modeled after the gibson ES-335. the first one i sold to buy an engagement ring and the second got stolen out of my car two years ago. i haven't really played since.

i already have a pretty good idea in mind of what i'm after, but i wouldn't mind hearing input from huddle guitarists. toss in any gear opinions too.

at this point i'd be starting over. my amp got jerked too.

i'm almost certainly going with a gibson ES-335. i'm finally in the market to be able to afford one after a decade of poverty and ripoff brands. however, i'm perfectly willing to be swayed if anyone has recommendations. i'm talking with some guys about getting a weekend cover band together, so i'd like to play it live, and sound-wise i generally just play standard-tuned alt rock type stuff, mostly powerchords through a distortion pedal.

my only hesitation in going with the 335 is the hollowbodies sometimes lose a little bit of tone, or at least that's been my experience with epiphones. i like to think the upper-tier guitars aren't going to run into that problem.

also, i'm looking to sink a little money into a nice rig, which will demand playing it in person beforehand, probably pretty extensively, so i've written off online purchasing. thanks for the offer though, maybe i'll hit you up for some gear.

While I play bass and not guitar, I've played for almost 15 years and never heard of an instrument 'losing tone'.  What did you perceive as the change in tonal character?

No idea, but you should always check out pawn shops.

This too, especially out of the way ones. My dad has made a lot of money in the past buying from pawn shops and reselling. Off the top of my head he snagged an older Les Paul for $600 and sold it online for over $6000.

not really losing tone, but maybe sacrificing certain tones. semihollows aren't generally your go-to if you're trying to get that hard rock bite.

Gotcha.  My guitarists have generally sworn by ESP for their hard rock/metal sound, but we were pretty heavy.  I'm not sure what your tonal goal is but I did like the sound of those ESPs, even on our more mellow stuff.

    • I think people are harsh on him over the weightlifting a little bit but at the same time I don’t see any evidence that he has done anything.  I would think he should have been working on strengthening his base after watching how easy he goes down with any kind of contact. Like with a couple of fingers even.
    • I see the issues with Tyreek, which is why I put an asterisk on him and all the way on the bottom. I don't even see him playing at all this entire year since he hasn't even been seen working out at all. But I do not think he's as hard to play with as Stefon Diggs is IMO and Tyreek is more of a game changer. But either way, it's pie in the sky.  Always loved Keenan and he is from the Carolinas so that's really the only thing that may interest him playing here if no one is giving him any calls to play.
    • It's not that I'm not rooting for him to do well, but I'd be lying if I said him having a good season wouldn't scare me after what we've seen out of him so far. I'd be afraid of it just being one of those situations you see all the time, a player is in a make it or break it season, they somehow raise their level of play to new levels, and then proceed to immediately drop back off a cliff the next season (although this does usually happen in contract years, not a player trying to not get cut). Now, if you tell me that no matter how well he plays, we're then going to flip him for a draft pick in the offseason, then yea, I'd want him to go off for a monster season so we can get a better return.
